I guess getting a specific color mixed could be a PITA though, seeing as you'd pretty much have to bring in a paint chip for them scan in the computer.

I am a little surprised that so many of you guys have not read about this before here on Moparts. Primerduster has been talking about it for at least a few years. And I rolled on rustoleum last fall and posted the results. But I have to say the info here is much more detailed and I guess we were only talking about using the flat black paint to make our cars look like primered rides.
I got to say 69charger is doing a great job passing the info and staying out of any arguments so kudos for that. I will just say keep trying on getting the thinner to paint mixture down. It really does help to get it quite thin but like 69charger I cannot give you a specific ratio. My trunk lid probably has like 10 coats of paint on it from experimentation and I did just use the grey spray primer in the areas that I took down to metal for smoothing out purposes. My car does look mean and at the Mopar show here in Maryland last fall everyone did think it was sprayed on epoxy primer. Their faces were priceless when I told them it was rolled. Anyway nothing really new to add since 69charger has done a good job so just count me in as a satisfied $50 paint job guy.

I don't think it really matters exactly how much thinner is used, but it does matter how thin the end product comes out. If it's warmer outside, obviously the warm paint will be not so thick and won't require as much thinner to achieve the proper thickness. It's really based on ambient temperature so you can't just lay down a specific mix.

Well I've got an old fender I'm going to try this on. I know I'm suposed to wet sand after the second coat, but how much time is needed between coats?

make sure you wet sand after each coat and mine dried overnight.

Well i did two coats Firday night and then this afternoon wet sanded with 400 and after that applied another coat. Things looked good at first but the paint dried in a finish similar to the crinkle finish on an air cleaner...me thinks me did something wrong. It did seem to have potential though and I am going to keep playing with it.

yeah i got one section of the hood i'm doing that wrinkled too i think the hood was too cold when i applied the paint. and hey i tried my palm sander... keep it good and wet it works great.

there is no real set mixing ratio, it's all based on the temperature, how old the paint is, how many times you opened the can, and which way the wind is blowing!!! you just have to have a "feel" for it. i've painted in both extreems of temperature, from about -10 deg celcus to +30 deg celcus and never had a problem with the paint having any bad habbits, but the mixing ratio was higher the colder it was.

Anyone else experiment with this over the weekend? I've put on 2 coats on a test area of an old door, wetsanding is next. Hard to tell what the finished product will look like at this point, and I'm getting some dog hair and other misc. junk on my test area, I need to take care of that..

so how do you apply the paint in hard to reach areas? such as drip rails on the roof edge--the vent slots in front of the widshield, etc.. ?

this morning I wet sanded the first 2 coats with 600 grit. It's smooth now but it doesn't yet have full color covering the area. Tonight I'll do 2 more coats then wetsand tomorrow morning with 800.

We'll know how it turns out in a couple of days, but so far about 10-15% mineral spirits is what has worked for me. It goes on very easily, and doesn't run. Wetsanding was pretty easy too.

When I sprayed rustolem last summer, I thought it said to thin it with asatone (sp?)...

Is it different if you roll it vs. spraying? Or is mineral sprits better for this process?
