So I just rebuilt a 650 AVS and installed on a stock 383HP (69 RR eng)... I'm at the point rt now that when in park or neutral I'm at 750 RPM but when I put it in gear is around 550 RPM.. car running nice but my question is.. What would be the best way to adjust and bring the RPM up just a smig in gear?? Adjust a/f , distributor or the idle screw? I'm so close to getting this tuned in, tunning carbs and idle adj isn't my strongest suit. Also .. is 750 to low at idle in park?? Whats the ideal RPM in park and in gear? any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Car is a 67 satellite Drive train is: 383 HP (bottom, all stock including org pistons) Edlebrock Performer RPM manifold Edlebrock 650 AVS 67 Torqueflight 3 speed auto 3.23 sure grip

I have a old mopar mech advance distributer with a HEI module ignition.... I have the distributor set at 36 degrees. ( thats what I was told to set it at) compression is what the mopar 69 spec was .. 10 to 1... most likely around 9.2 to 1...

Idle settings are a set of interrelated adjustment.
Idle mixture screws, idle speed screws and idle timing all play interactively with each other. You cannot adjust just one without affecting the others.
Get them all close, set the timing for what you want AT IDLE and it's NOT 36 degrees, if you still have points make sure the dwell is in spec.
Then put a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum and adjust the idle mixture screws for maximum vacuum at idle, then a hair more so it just starts to drop. Basically, if leaning it causes the manifold vacuum to rise keep leaning till it just drops, same for richening it.
Then set idle speed, in NEUTRAL.
Then go back to timing and check/reset as needed.
Then go back to idle mixture and set/readjust as necessary.
Then go back to idle speed and set/readjust as necessary
Repeat until everything stays where it should be.
Then you'll find it's properly set.
As for what specs to use, unless it's substantially different than stock use the settings in the factory service manual.

Thanks!! I'm going to give it a go tomorrow. Supercuda... I have a Chevy HEI 4 pin module with a Mechanical Advance Mopar Distributer, so no points just a magnetic pickup. The guy I got the distributor from said to set at 36 deg. (dist has no springs, no vacuum advance) ..... Thanks again everyone for all the advice! I put a pic of my engine in one of my craigslist ads if you want to see my setup (can't figure out how to add pics here) http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/pts/5779415417.html

Engines need advance, either via mechanical and/or vacuum or something electronic doing what the mechanical and vacuum advance did. A GM HEI module isn't it either. Anything else not stock on this stock 69 383?

I would set the initial timing with the vacuum gauge method which includes reducing the idle RPM to the lowest in gear hot idle speed that it will achieve which is what you will see from stoplight to stoplight. As Cab said all of it is interrelated
