I'm close to being done acquiring parts to put a 2013 mustang Shelby gt500 setup on my charger. 15" rotors with 6 piston brembo and 13.8"rears. My question to those with big brakes, what did you do with the master cylinders?

Did you switch to manual brakes or possibly hydroboost setups? Maybe one of you has insight on this. I'm leaning towards how hydroboost setup but I'm not sure if it will be the way to go.

Thanks

15" wow!!!! I'm running 13" viper calipers using Dr.diffs 15/16" master cylinder, manual brakes, I thought I wouldn't like it, but after a few drives i don't think I'll ever go back to power! you gotta post some pics of that setup!

the easiest thing to do is to also swap on the master from the mustang. it's matched to those calipers already, and takes all guesswork out. The Mustang is using vaccum assisted brakes too, right?

I'm running Porsche 6-piston brembos on 14" viper rotors on the front of my Dakota, and the front calipers off the 1st and 2nd gen Vipers on 13" rotors are mounted to my rear axle. I switched to the 03/04 Dakota master cylinder because it's the same exact part as the gen 3 and 4 vipers, which had the same size rear calipers, and 4-piston fronts, plus it's a disc/disc master where the truck used to be a disc/drum.

An alternative is to compare the size of the mustang master to the one currently on your car and if close enough, give it a shot. It can get tricky when you mix and match parts from across brands and build a system that was never 'designed' to be together by OEMs. you may want to reduce master size to get the pedal feel you want, but then may run into lack of volume and run out of pedal stroke before maximizing brake effort.

Hydroboost is an option, just depends on how far from stock appearing you're willing to deviate.

I am running 8 piston front Brembos and 4 piston rears off of an SL55 Mercedes on my car, and I just looked up the OE master cylinder size and found a late model Corvette one was nearly the same and just used that..was much easier in my case to use that one then try and adapt the Benz one. With a vacuum booster as well, and happy with the combo as well.

Using the Mustang master (and booster even) makes plenty of sense as said...since it is already going to be matched pretty much to the combo you are using.

Wheel selection really sucks because the mustang wheels don't have much caliper clearance. I looked at using the Vette carbon ceramic rotors, it would be a real headache to get them to work. Actually more like expensive than a headache...Tim

Daaannnnnggg! How are you gonna find wheels and tires to fit the brakes with out giving up traction? There is limit to how well you can corner on skinny tires? I've told it takes 17" wheels to clear 13" rotor and 18" to clear a 14". So Will you need 19" wheels? Perhaps they sell bigger tires too, I'm not always the brightest bulb. One thing I do know is, that's one helluva set of stoppers you got there!

19" wheels from Forgestar would be my best economical choice.

I can still get a nice wide tire under my car. I'm not worried about that. Third gens are blessed with big wheel tubs.

I'm checking into how much vacuum that mustang booster needs. I may just steal the whole setup like you guys were suggesting. Use their engineering to my benefit.

With the earlier 13" Cobra discs + calipers, I use a 15/16" master (Dr Diff) with 8" re-pop dual diaphragm booster to get enough line pressure for max effort stops.

It would help to know the piston area of your front calipers. If equal or bigger than the 13" Cobra units, the setup above should work.
