Sorry that happened to you! What was the root cause? I've never seen a failure like that...

Edit: also, I'm sure the dozens of little planetary gears in an automatic couldn't possibly bind or lock up... could they? work

Stock bolt in ORC are not a waste of time - without the bolt in ORC you would have failed more than what you did - you just exceeded the capacity of the case by having a bolt in ORC. It did it's job and may have saved your feet.

At Chrysler back in the 80's - NYPD and Detroit PD used to regularly fail the transmissions when the cops did "certain" maneuvers on the 727 cop cars, on the El Cheapo police package with 998 - we never had any ORC failures. Same findings up to when we stopped making the 42/44RE versus the same basic truck with a 46. More ORC elements (rollers) reduces the opportunity for roller tilting from "spit back".

some where in the recesses of my feeble mind, i recall something about using an ORC from a C-6 ford ? something about having twice the rollers and springs, or am i delusional from all my meds ? does anyone else remember this ?

yes it banged hard, when the teeth broke, it happened on launch.glad there and not at top end of the track
