Since someone swapped out the seats on my '70 for later ones, when I swap the interior back I need to redo the seats. Are the frames/cores all the same from 70-74?

Nope.

You need 1970 to early 1971 frames.

I know a guy that just had some powder coated, he is about 2 hours from you.

You will need the early hinge covers also & the early style backs, the rest of the hardware swaps over.

Can you physically mount 72-74 tracks on a 70 seat bottom? I know the early style have locks on both the inner and outer tracks. The 72-74's only have a lock on the outside track.

I knew about the backs/hinge covers/foam/etc. Was hoping to be able to use the frames I have. Do you know if they are for sale and how much?

FWIW, the repop seat frames that places like Classic Industries and Year One are selling, list the frames as 70-74.

I saw that and that's what sparked my question. I don't trust what it says in the parts catalogs! LOL

I am skeptical as well. 72, 73, and 74 seat foams were molded into the frames. That is why no one repops them. Legendary does have a great video on how to rebuild them without new buns.

You can reuse the bases, but the backs on yours are set up for the small button style.

If yours are 1971 backs with the internal spring basket, I could take them in as a partial trade but I'd have to check them out first.

I can check on hinge covers too if you do not have any yet?

Im in a similar boat where someone swapped the seats or recovered them at some point prior to me owning the car. Based on my VIN and other original cars I've seen I should have plastic backs, but mine are currently vinyl back.

So I wonder if i bought the correct seat cover and backs if they would work on the seat frame and foam core.

I have a 70 also and it had 72 seats (I think). They had side releases and plastic backs. The seat pattern appeared to be Barracuda. The seat back foam was trashed so I figured it was worth trying to install 70 Challenger foam and covers on them. The bottom was simple. I did find that once you trim enough foam from the later seat back with an electric knife it would allow the 70 seat back foam to be installed. I'm not saying it was quick and easy but it can be done. You have to pay attention to where the listing rods go and will have to make your own. The toughest part on mine was the area behind the headrest where the overlap joint is. I did not document anything because I figured nobody else would want to go that route. If you have all the necessary 70 stuff, foam and covers and a poor later seat you may want to try it.

1973 maybe? When did the seat belt switch enter use? You can see the pigtail connector for it in the last photo.

That's not a 73 seat. It has the hard seat back.
