I do not think that I have ever seen any discussion regarding the original factory fabrication of vehicle fender tags. I am curious as to how the process worked and what machinery was used Anybody got information on this subject? I would like to see how close my guess of the processes involved would be. Thanks

A buddy of mine bought a fender tag machine of eBay! He has made-up a few funny ones, like "What the He11 you lookin' at". It is a typeset machine that a roll of CRS sheet stock already made with the curled ends feeds into and stamps the info onto, then cuts off the tag.

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

To the best of my knowledge all the providers of repro fender tags are using the old original machines that were used in the factories. I know that Kevin Marti here in AZ. is using one for sure.

The first machine for stamping metal ID tags was the Address-O-Graph which stamped one at a time, automated ones followed for mass production.

The 3/4 scale tags that I made were done with an Addressograph 350. The dies that pressed the tag were made by a machinist friend. The ridges on the plate are for clamping and alignment.

Okay thanks for the info.

Now I know that I have a really crazy bit of kharma going here. I used to work for a business machine company in Wichita Kansas in 1971 after getting out of the army and they repaired/sold Pitney-Bowes and Addressograph equipment. I had forgotten that bit of employment history. so yea, I am familiar with the equipment. I was guessing Pitney/Bowes and had forgotten about Addressograph.

Thanks for the feedback.
regards
