I have a leak at the speedometer pinion seal. I have changed the seal twice and it still leaks. I even tried a little Hylomar around the outside of the little seal. It is definitely leaking between the seal and the pinion shaft. A close inspection does not reveal any problems, so I am at a loss as to how to seal it up.
Any suggestions?

My two suggestions would be;
-Flip the seal over
-Try a different housing

I'll try that and hope that does it. That's about as easy a fix as I can imagine.

This is the way they're installed from the factory, seal lip faces the inside.

John, that's the way the original seal was in there and that is the way that the new seal is in there now. I am using ATF 4 as recommended by A&A. I pulled the speedo drive back out today and was able to push a new seal down farther into the housing and put another seal in the original location. It was tricky getting the seal down into the the lower step and required a bit of patience to get the pinion stem through it without pushing it out. But I got 2 new seals in there along with the wire retainer. If it leaks now, I will be at a complete loss. Thanks for help guys! I really appreciate it.

I pulled the speedo drive back out today and was able to push a new seal down farther into the housing and put another seal in the original location. The original (correct) seal location is fully bottomed out in the housing. If yours wasn't fully bottomed that is probably why it leaked.

Well after driving it for a couple of hours, it looks like the leak has stopped. I think the key was pushing the seal down into the lower step. I added a second seal above it, but I think the real solution was pushing the seal down deeper than it had been.
Thanks again for the help!

I pulled the speedo drive back out today and was able to push a new seal down farther into the housing and put another seal in the original location. The original (correct) seal location is fully bottomed out in the housing. If yours wasn't fully bottomed that is probably why it leaked. Going through this right now as I just replaced my selector shaft seal along with a new valve body from Turbo Action Anyways , the little rubber seal that pushes down into the smaller hole within the speedo housing with a 1/4" socket went in fine with a little Vaseline/Grease However like mentioned , when you try to push the speedo gear through the seal , it pushes the rubber seal back out That c-clip Does it ride also within that same smaller hole on top of the rubber seal , or does it sit above the lip within the larger hole directly above the seal ? If it goes within the smaller hole also , how do you compress it without damaging the rubber seal itself , another words a pick or small screwdriver trying to get it within the smaller hole is next to impossible Could try pushing a socket over the c-clip on that side while sliding the speedo gear through the rubber seal on the other side trying to keep the seal within that smaller hole from moving ? Anyways any more advice on that c-clip and keeping everything in place while pushing in the speedo gear Thanx Scott

Yep, using a small deep well socket to push things into place and then hold them there was a real help for me.
After a few hundred miles, mine has a drop of ATF on the cable end, but no drips. It would be nice if it were completely oil tight, but it is ALMOST oil tight. So I'm calling it good.

That c-clip
Does it ride also within that same smaller hole on top of the rubber seal , or does it sit above the lip within the larger hole directly above the seal ?
With the seal installed all the way into the adapter bore, install the wire ring sideways with the gap pointing out, push it into the bore and then rotate it 90° then push it in firmly against the seal using a socket that is only slightly smaller than the adapter bore. With the wire ring in place the seal shouldn't push out when the pinion shaft is pushed through it.

Thanx guys , appreciate it
Great advice on the c-clip instillation method
However I used my socket trick keeping the seal in place within the small hole while sliding in the speedo gear
As of right now the seal is in place correctly ,however the c-clip is above the ridge in the larger hole right above that seal
If it starts dripping , I will try that c-clip installation trick , Thanx again
