Actually, I've already tried another voltage regulator, alternator, and my battery checked out OK. When the car is running, the gauge points towards the D on the gauge. I also have a digital readout gauge plugged into my cigarette lighter, and when I turn the car off, that gauge starts to go back up into the 12v range. I need to start chasing wires, but where is the best place to start? I'd line to streamline this diagnosis as much as possible. Thanks, Mike.

'69 down box reg/single field terminal alt or '70 up flat reg/2 field terminal alt system? with key on, blue wire field terminal at alt (green if 69 down) and blue wire at reg needs to be hot. that'll get us started

Alright, and check continuity on the wire between the green terminals on the alt & reg. an alligator clip is an easy check on the alt field & on the reg a thin probe to get into the green wire terminal on the reg & pull the triangle connector off & confirm the female connectors are tight. with the reg being replaced I'm assuming it has a good ground to the firewall. first tho I would confirm fire to the blue wire terminals at alt/reg (thin probe on the blue wire terminal also). assuming all your hard components are OK, all that is left is a wiring (power side) or ground (return side) issue.

Follow Rapids advise I just had a similar circumstance last year on my 73 that burned up the wires to the firewall and into the box area Fixed now but I had a nightmare trying to get it all worked out

To make a long story short. My alternator was intermittently overcharging and was boiling acid out of the battery. My blue wire melted almost from the alternator to the ignition switch. I found a pinched wire in the column. Take a peak at the base of the column and check the ignition switch plug and eyeball the wiring to see if you see any signs of burn`t or melted connectors or wires. It would have saved me a lot of time in my problem.
