Direct Clutch..Correction Chrysler calls it the rear clutch...I was a Ford Tech they call it a Direct Clutch...Here's a clutch & band apply chart... http://www.mopar1.us/clutchstall.html

The direct clutch in a Torqueflite is the front clutch, the rear clutch is needed for all forward gears and is probably the source of the problem. (if the fluid level is corrected first)
When GM/Ford terminology is used on Mopars it creates some confusion. direct/forward= GM/Ford front/rear= Mopar.
