Took Belvy out for about 150 miles yesterday. Now, I noticed it is losing forward gear and was down 3 quarts with no evidence of leaking! It slips into first but getting worse. I had been driving the car lightly for about 100 miles prior with no trans problems. It goes right into reverse still though. Band adjustment or converter going? It is a street strip trans but a used converter. Help!

Did you top it off? If so, is it still slipping? 3 qts is a lot to be missing and not notice a leak. Maybe it was sucked through the vacuum line and out the exhaust

There is no vacuum line on a Mopar trans.

The forward band is only applied in 2nd gear. The low reverse band is applied for braking in manual low and for reverse. The forward clutch is aplied in 3rd & reverse. My bet is all of these components are at least some what functional. How ever the direct clutch is applied only in all 3 forward gears. I believe it is failed causing your problem. I wouldn't mess around, just pull it and repair it. These transmisions are very simple to repair. Get a good book or find some one local to help. Not very costly either. Most of my stock Torque flite rebuilds cost less than $100 in parts.

Direct Clutch..Correction Chrysler calls it the rear clutch...I was a Ford Tech they call it a Direct Clutch...Here's a clutch & band apply chart...

The direct clutch in a Torqueflite is the front clutch, the rear clutch is needed for all forward gears and is probably the source of the problem. (if the fluid level is corrected first)

When GM/Ford terminology is used on Mopars it creates some confusion.
direct/forward= GM/Ford
front/rear= Mopar.

wow dude that sucks? I thought was a newer trans? I guess you could pull the pan and take a look. Easy to tell if you have a bunch of crud in the pan. Is it full now? I broke the gov'ner assembly in that old red 69...I had 1st and Rev and that was it. Does't really sound they same though. At least the weather looks nice. We had snow and cold today..yeah!

Sounds as if the clutches are gone and it needs rebuild. Lame!

I have good units at the warehouse up north. Hmmmmm, what to do? I'll investigate choices tonite.

Been a Mopar tech since 1986 and we use the terms front and rear clutch and as said the rear clutch is applied in all forward gears and is most likely your problem. Good luck with it. Ron

Sorry about the terminology. I work at a GM dealer as a tech. Sometimes I feel the force from the dark side.
