So I tried it on the next cage. I'll use the notcher on a 90 degree fish mouth, but anything else, the chop saw. The notches are just as good and take 1/3 the time.

See if you can tell which ones were done which way.

Once you try it, you'll never go back! It is so fast and accurate!

Notching tubing on a vertical mill is sweet........however, it IS hard on your mill and will loosen it up. IF you also intend to continue to use your mill to do precision work, buy a separate notcher. I use a mill, but its an old beat up one I bought JUST to notch tubing. My GOOD mill never gets used to notch tubing. I use hole saws, but even at the proper speed and technique, you WILL knock teeth off the saws at times. If you replace a hole saw every time you knock a tooth off, you will go through a bunch of them. After it knocks a couple teeth off, it shakes the mill pretty good and that's what loosens it up.

I have notched a many a piece of tubing with a chop saw, like in the linked video, although I didn't clean it up with a hand grinder like video. With a large rock on a bench grinder, you will eventually get the rock shaped like tubing and it makes cleanup a breeze. However I can't say that is faster than a hole saw type notcher. Not close to me, because if you make the cut right the first time on the hole saw notcher, all you need to do is debur and weld

and something to do with your junk hole saws. when the teeth are all gone, just about, or enough are missing you don't want to use them any more, grind off the remaining teeth, then use a disc sander while the hole say "blank" is spinning in your drill press, lathe, or mill at a fairly high speed, forming a sharp edge on the saw body. take a 5/8-18 bolt of approximately 3-4" long [or what ever thread size your holesaw has], cut the head off the bolt and attach. these re-purposed saws work great for punching holes in gasket material or leather, and i have also used one of these contraptions to punch a hole in .024 aluminium sheet for a gauge installation. resharpen as necessary. these also work to cut burr free plugs in 1/4" urethane and hard rubber sheet stock using approximately 1200-1800 rpm in your drill press. it's hard for me to through any broken tool away if i can use it for another purpose.

So, thanks to Quicktree, I now own a Pro-Tool tubing bender with dies, and a Pro-Tool tubing notcher. He even threw in the tubing software. Can't wait to get it all set up and start playing. Thanks again, Quicktree.
