I have these two gear sets and sun gears. Can you tell me which is which?

2.74 low is on the left.
BTW, the pic shows two ring gears and two planitary sets, the sun gears are missing.

So the steel is the low gear set?

Not all steel carriers are the low gearset, the steel carriers were introduced in '74...long before the low gearset.

Do me a favor.. measure the diameter of
both.. I did on the screen and it shows
different.. but that might be my screen or
your camera angle

i have a steel planet set pn 37434476. is that a low gear set or regular ? is there a way to count the gear teeth to tell ? are the spline counts and pressure angles of the splines the same between gear sets ?

There is a difference in the sun shell. The low gear shell has a ridge along the bottom to accommodate the taller sun gear. Low gear set on the left.


The reason for the ridge on the shell is because the sun gears are slightly different. Low gear sun on the bottom.

thanks for the reference pics. the set i have must be the standard set. by looking at the 6th pic where the pinion axles are welded to the case half opposite the hub with the snap ring groove, i have four round holes present, where your pic shows four square notches with the bottom of the notch opening into the case inner bore. or were there variations of this and possibly another quick way to identify the low gear set from the standard ?

Don't forget to weld the steel planet. Redo the factory weld and weld the fillet. Taken many apart that were pre-broken.

you are so right ! those welds on mine look like they were done by just pointing the gun in the general direction and pulling the trigger ! just sloppy workmanship in my opinion. i'm guessing the welding operation was automated ?

The low gear set measures 5.0645. The stock aluminum set measures 4.4965

I did reweld them. I started going around one then I felt like it was getting too hot so I stopped. The rest I just went over the factory weld. How far do you guys weld them?

I'm talking about the snout on the other end of the planetary and the base you can see in your picture.

Dang.... Now that the the trans is together I see this. I'm guessing this is the weld you guys were talking about? Maybe I'll pull it back apart this winter and redo all the factory welds on the low gear set.

So you weld both sides of the planetary on the gear set? Or just the factory welded side?
