The instrument cluster on my car looks like it came from the factory painted black and not the usual woodgrain. Did they build them this way?

I used to have a 75 Dart Special Edition and it came with the black instrument cluster and high-gloss woodgrain on the glove box/radio panels. Also the earlier 70's A-bodies also came with the black bezel instead of the woodgrain one, this is what my dad's 71 scamp had. Sounds like someone swapped something around.

Why would you think it was swapped around? You made reference to 2 cars that had black clusters. Mine is black ( don't know if it is original ) and it has a black interior with only a bezel around the radio and a/c. Just wanted to know if this was original. Going to have it restored as black, cause it looks cool.
