barracudabob OP super stock B Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 1,090 Saskatchewan, Canada	Just bought a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 3.9 auto. It will accelerate to about 30 mph, and no more. Engine is still running, but not speeding up. No codes, and no check engine lites on. Where do i start checking?

stumpy I Win Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 32,928 Grand Prairie,Texas	Disconnect the battery and let it sit for a short while then try it again. It sounds like it's in limp mode. If it's a trans causing it to go into limp it won't give you a code or a light you can read without the trans reader.

Does the transmission shift or just stay in one gear. Does the engine sound like it's laboring or is it revving high? barracudabob OP super stock B Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 1,090 Saskatchewan, Canada	Trans shifts up and down no problem. The engine just seems to flat spot. push on the accelerator, and nothing, no bucking, backfiring, nothing.

minivan master M Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 9,066 Eugene, Oregon	In 73-75, at a Service station I worked at, we had 4 cars that had the same problem.. All 4 turned out to be collapsed exhaust pipes.. Inner and outer tubing, and the inner had collapsed and blocked the exhaust.. After the 1st one, the rest were a lot easier to diagnose...
