Gonna install a brake controller in my '14 Ram. Suggestions on type, brand and location of the controller in the cab?

Go for the factory one that mounts in the lower part of the left side of the dash. There should already be a wiring harness connection for it.

Ditto - works seamlessly with the truck and you get good info on the dash too.

iagree My buddy bought a newer Ram and it didn't have the brake controller in it, but the dealer installed one for him. Easy deal to do, so I'm told...harness is already there for it. Worked great.

My 14 Ram came with a factory controller. I'm not sure about other years but my 14's controller is in the center of the dash, directly under the HVAC controls. Here's a picture I found on google.

Went to the dealer and enquired about the price and it was $541 with discount. That is insane. I don't care how many benefits it has $400 over an after market unit is not justifiable. I was ready to give $300 but I can't pay their price. It is going to have to be after market for me. My son just bought a Ford Ecoboost and the dealer put in a factory controller for $222 before he took deliver. I understand the circumstances are different but not $340 different.

I bought a 2016 1500 two months ago with the brake controller. Works great and sure beats the ones I used to have mounted in the way under the dash.

In case you are towing something wide, I added this;
For an odd reason, my truck wasn't spec'ed for the tow mirrors. I bought the OEM ones online. They cost more than the option but I needed them and didn't want the cheesy clamp on mirror extenders. Install only took 20-25 minutes per side. Just make sure to research how to install the rivet nuts without a tool.

BTW, brake controllers sure have come a long over the years.
I remember the one my parents had on a '73 Newport. It was under the hood, had two long coil springs that were progressively wound tighter.
To adjust the brake setting, you loosened a wingnut and moved bar that spanned both coil springs. Moving it towards the tighter wound coils (less resistance) gave more braking.
