I am in the process of changing the cam and heads on my ride.. glad I decided to do it.. I pulled the rocker shafts to pull the PRs... but before doing that I seen 1 rocker loose ... when I got the PRs out one of the exhaust PRs the ball was broke off... it always checked good on the lash but it always was noisey and now I see why... these were Smith Brother PRs... that was the first time I ever bought from them... and the last (the PR was sitting on top of the ball and it didnt come out of the lifter).. I got lucky

Maybe that valve is tight in the guide? Or something is creating resistance there. I have run a bunch of different sets of Smith Brothers. Never had an issue with their PRs. I checked everything when it went together.. guides were fine... I dont know why it broke.. but it was the only one... I will go back with Trends.. plus I want to see if they can make both ends tapered and no inserts

Id contact them and see if they want it back to see if they can determine an issue or cause.
Since your going to a softer cam setup wouldnt it be easier and cheaper just to replace the one?
"I checked everything when it went together.. guides were fine... I dont know why it broke.. but it was the only one..."
No one is perfect and we all can miss one now and then.
"It always checked good on the lash but it always was noisey and now I see why..."
Im surprised as good as you are in this field you would let one just make noise when if all 16 are not acting the same would show something was off.
I believe it was setting on top of the ball when I checked lash.. but when the engine was running it was bouncing around and the lash was changing all the time... if you were to check lash and it didnt change what would you do EDIT This is the first PR I ever broke... its broke so thats all there is to it.. I'll stick with the companies that have worked for me.. that includes OEM and Trends.. I dont think OEM will do restrictions in PRs so I'll deal with Trends

What would I do....good thought. I cant really say since I dont know how much noise it made. Id like to say investigate it till I found why, but thats not me either.
Maybe wait till winter or next tear down and pay a bit of extra attention to that area. But I sorta tend to wait till something becomes a problem for better or worse.
I wasnt being harsh.
Did you swap heads out and if so what are you going with? I wanted to lighten up the front end... I had ported W-2s iron heads on it but am changing to ported W-5s.. I had to change to a wider LSA cam for the injection.. the 105 LSA didnt like playing with the injection.. lots of carbon in the intake track and it didnt like to idle up to 2300 rpm..I went with a 110 LSA cam

So... you are modifying the engine to work with your injection system? Something doesn't sound right here. I always thought that the cam was picked per application and engine parameters, not by what fuel management systems want (just a dig at EFI, no harm meant).

I always thought that the cam was picked per application and engine parameters, not by what fuel management systems want (just a dig at EFI, no harm meant). I can manually over ride the fuel and have it work but the over lap kicks a lot of carbon back up into the intake when idling EDIT I dont care what fuel source it is... it will do the same thing at idle.. its just a ton of over lap that isnt made to idle

I broke a Smith Bros. 3/8x.120 pushrod (it ended up being .083 but I was charged for the .120 wall )in two pieces on the dyno that ended up breaking the top off of the Crower solid roller lifter letting the lifter come out of the lifter bore so the other half of that pushrod could fall down into the lifter bore damaging the cam lobe It had a obvious flaw in the metal in the middle of the pushrod that caused the failure,I took it back to them and they saw the flaw and replaced the two bad pushrods, the one next to it was bent also, and no offer for any help on the damages it caused. I was buying Mantons before that and I am now buying them again for all my race builds, better quality at a better price Smith Bros. use to be about five miles away from my shop here in Bend, OR was the only reason I used them. They moved to the next town north about 20 miles away, it only takes two or three days on the Fed Ex Ground shipping from Manton with no problems yet with any of there race pushrods after using several hundred sets of thiers

Hear ya, my cam has 97* of overlap iirc and no expert but that seems up there compared to some I`ve seen............

Yep.. already have a plan... change the cam and the heads.. going with a solid FT cam which is a little less on lift and duration with a 110 LSA.. this 105 cam is just not made to idle much.. as soon as I get above 2300 rpm its fine.. but this will see a lot of street miles... putting on the W-5s will take some weight off the front end and they flow just a touch more than the W-2s

At first when it was making noise I thought I had a header leak making the noise... but when I finally got around to checking the header it was good... so I pulled the VC off and checked the lash again for the third time in a month or so.. they ALL checked good on the lash... so being the lash checked out I figured the noise was else where... but the timing of the noise sure sounded like it was a lash thing...I even spun each PR when checking the lash to see if one was bent... none felt bad while spinning them.. but the ball was still under there to turn on
