The red is the intake and the blue is the exhaust

Unless I'm missing something you have over 1/2" on the exhaust and over 3/8" on the intake. Are you measuring where the lip of the valve made the impression?

I was never good at reading this type of caliper and I can always get great help on this site so I like to double check myself

It looks like you are measuring in the wrong place. Measure the red clay at the thinnest point where the edge of the valve compresses the clay.

I quit measuring V to P with a dial indicactor after .120 on both valves, that is plenty up Have you checked, degree, the cam yet? If not do that first and then recheck your valve to piston clearances and please let us know the differences, scope If any are found thumbs

Or taller pistons

i measure my clearence on the piston, slicing into the clay if neccessary if i'm being extra vigilant.

Agreed, Unless I am seeing it wrong, shouldn't you be measuring here:

Do like Reba and measure in the valve pocket

IMO, the clay method isn't accurate enough if the v/p clearance is questionably close.
Using a checking spring with an indicator on the retainer is really the only way to know what you really have.

The only thing I use the clay for is checking the radial clearance.

I have checked P to V with light springs at the retainers and then put the race springs on and used several differnt pieces of clay laid acorss the piston top valve reliefs and saw mabe .003 to .005 differences, more with the race springs shock shruggy

Well I thought I would double check myself today and this is before I cut it open to measure

I think you should have cut them & measured while they were still on the piston. Lifting them off makes the clay stretch a bit so your reading will not be as accurate.

Wad that up so you can cut some 1/4 inch thick by 1/4 inch wide strips long enough to fit in both valve pockets on the pistons over towards the cylinder wall exhaust side and then rotate the motor through one complete valve cycle and use a dial caliper to measure the thickness of the clay on the pistons scope twocents I use the skinny part that you see coming out the bottom of the dial calipers when you spread them open next to the clay on the piston tops and push the calipers open say around .500 and the press the body of the caliper down until the base barely hits the clay and then look at that measuremnent scope

Okay I'll have to try again because I'm was getting frustrated with so much clearance to me it's like wasted power

Could there be anything from keeping the valves from opening all the way I just got the heads freshen up maybe springs are not right
