Either something is flexing or the trans was not tight against the block..

The starter loosened up quite awhile back. Only a small portion of the break is fresh. Must have cracked way back and been working on it till mission accomplished.

The only thing I can think of is that the starter
was ready to fall off and kicked it sideways..

I agree... I'd burn that back on... I had a tail
shaft fall off my bench when I was building it and
cracked a chunk off... I burnt it back on and hit it
with a file.. no leaks... the only bad part.. you have
to pull the trans.... put some big Vs in it on
both sides and burn it in... I layed a straight
edge with clamps on it while burning

oh fart...... with the heat involved with welding would you want the case bolted to a block and a starter in place to aid in keeping stuff lined up? I certainly don't have the capabilities to do that work at home.
