Hello guys,

my dad has a 360 with a TF 904. The problem is, that the engine stops running sometimes, when put in gear.
Sometimes it runs normal.
I have to say, that the kickdown linkage ise missing. I ordered a new cable, but it hasn't been shippet yet.
I shift it by hand but my dad doesn't. It has a big thermoquad on top.
I don't know if it has to do with the missing linkage, the carb or maybe the converter.
Is it possible, that the converter locks-up completely sometimes, even when the engine is reving low?
It seems, that this does not occur if you put it in R or 2 instead of D. But maybe it is just coincidence.
When I install the new kickdown I also check if I can reajust the band.

EDIT:
I forgot something. It seems as if the transmission in D ignores the 2nd gear. It tries to shift but it ends up in 3rd.
By hand everything is fine.
I don't think that it is because of the missing kickdown. Normally the trans should also shift back in 2nd when driving slowly, shouldn't it?
So maybe the transmission shuts down the engine while in D because it is in 3rd already, even if the car stands still?

I'd wire the kickdown lever on the trans halfway back for the time being (unless Kunkel or someone advises other wise) and you might take out the two idle mixture screws & shoot a 2 second blast of brake kleen into each hole with the thin red straw then replace the screws to their original position (for that, before removal count # of turns in to lightly seated).

I agree with RR.
You need that kick-down for tranny life, but it is most likely not your problem.

Sounds like a tuning issue to me.

I have mechanical Aptitude.
I can screw up anything.

My brother had a car that did something similar but only in reverse. Idled fine, put it in D it was happy, stick it R and it wanted to stall, you had to get on the gas,not was almost like a standard trans. Turns out the trans was no good

So when I get the new kickdown cable, should I give it some tension, so the lever is pulled a bit, even when the accelerator is not moved yet?
