HI
I am not having any luck with digonosing this noise. the noise sounds like a belt squealing just not as loud. could i have spun a bering? the engine is a 66 440 and runs great other than this. oil press is above 30 @ idle. i have disconceted the belts to find the noise still their. it just started squealing today and all i did was start it to let it run because it doesnt run much in the winter months it is coming from the front of the engine. did i destroy my 3000$ 440?

and also if i let it sit and cool the noise doesnt come back for 1 minute or so.

thanks in advance

Not sayin this is it. But I had the EXACT same problem before. Ended up being either a bent pully or one of the pullies was too close to one of the water the water pump bolts. I've also shimmed pullies to clear bolts before. Gotta work with what you have sometimes. Try one of the above, never know. Good luck!

you could turn it over by hand with a socket on the crank and see if it is hard to turn.you can loosen the plugs if you like.

Check to see if the vibration damper is rubbing the timing chain cover. The rubber cushion which bonds the outer weighted part of the damper to the inner part can deteriorate causing separation of the two pieces. Happened on two of my RB's. Made a heck of a racket and ground a portion of the timing cover away.

Had the same thing on a 454 chev with a pcv in one valve cover and a rubber grommet in the other valve cover..Problem was a vacuum created in the engine. Make sure your breather is not plugged. What a squealing racket it made... Car owner was just getting ready to drop the pan.....
