I took this 3.23 Suregrip assembly apart today & felt that the date code 'gap' was cool to see & worth sharing.

Ring gear - 4-16-66

Suregrip unit - 10-31-66

Pinion - 11-18-66

That is cool. I'm surprised the ring gear was manufactured so far in advance of the other components. I've only seen components with a 2 month window, but that's on Dana 60's.

Thanks for sharing.

Awesome, looks like a really clean unit.

I've honestly never looked at the component date codes. So this means that a ring and pinion were NOT manufactured as a matched set and the pinion depth number was a result of fitting the two parts together? Does this then mean that someone could take any ring gear and any pinion (of the same ratio obviously) and use them as a pair by checking the pattern with gear marking paste?

It sounds like they were building and measuring parts and then matching them up at a later date.

Could be your ring gear was an outlier.
