There is a tool to pull and reinstall with doing nothing more than taking the linkage levers off, use a clamp with the driver tool to get it back on. You might have to unbolt the trans crossmember and lower the trans some to gain the needed clearance above.
running up my post count some more .

I have a transmission leak at the kickdown lever shaft seal.
Kick down lever shaft seal or shift shaft seal?

Kick down lever shaft seal or shift shaft seal? Oops! Shift shaft seal. Just forward of the neutral safety switch. So is the fix the same, or does the valve body need to be removed?

you can change it with out the tool and in place
Small screw driver at an angle grab the seal and pop it out
Deep Socket to drive new seal in
All you need to do is remove the shift and kickdown leavers
Did my Challenger once and was working around the headers also

So where does the kickdown seal go and how is it installed?
If it's not visibly leaking (likely) it's best to leave it alone. Once the e-clip and washer are removed to access the seal, it's possible to drop the shaft into the trans, even on the bench.

It looks like it's leaking from only the shift shaft seal as far as I can tell. If there is a chance of dropping the shaft into the trans by attempting to change kickdown seal, than I shall take your advice and leave it alone.
