is there a trick to getting the metal seals on the pump and input shaft to latch or hook together?

the kits come with a few , are you using the correct size ??

It's possible that you might have a kit for an early trans. The sealing rings are a tad smaller on the earlier ones but just about everything elses is the same.

I got a kit off the "bay" and I swear the sealing material was more plastic than anything- and WAY brittle like you described. Did you get your kit from bulkpart? They used to sell good kits - curious if they stopped. I need to get another..
