I bought a '68 RR back in March of last year and I'm becoming more interested in trying to find out as much of the history of the car as I can.

Unfortunately the original fender tag is gone and has been replaced with a crappy reproduction so basically all I have is the VIN number.........no fender tag, no build sheet, nada.

What's the best way to go about trying to track down information on the car?

Post the VIN with a request for info on the various registries. Start with Barry Washington's site; http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/

Try to track down previous owners. This is difficult, time consuming and all it takes is one lost link to the chain to put a stop to the research, but it's your best bet. With luck, maybe a previous owner has a build sheet or the original 'tag. I know I kept photocopies (originals always went with the car) of any documentation on any cars I owned. and even a photo or a pencil rubbing of the original fender tag or a photo of the buildsheet would be invaluable.

Good luck,

Dave

What exactly do you mean by history? past ownership or how the car was originally built?

I'd really like to know how the car was originally built. All I know at this point is that it was an original 383-4bbl car and I have a feeling it was a maroon color from a few paint remnants here and there.

As the car is now black with a 440 (A12 clone) I'm just interested in finding the original specs.

If I could trace the ownership history that would be a bonus.

Assuming it is a 383 car other than options they were all pretty much the same regarding what was on the broadcast sheet with regards to build componants. Go to http://www.andy440.com/68facts.htm and look at the standard and optional equipment. These cars came with Rallye suspension standard and were available with a couple of different interiors. The upper door frame paint color MAY give you a clue to the original color of the interior.

Look for original color paint up under the package tray in the trunk and under the door panels. Look for the broadcast sheet under seats and under the dash behind the glove box.

The V.I.N. already tells you the model and engine. If it is a real 4 speed car there are telltale items such as the bracket welded to the frame for the clutch linkage and a firewall pedal brace.

Trying to research the ownership history is nearly impossible with the Privacy Act other than through previous owners.

Try this, send a letter requesting your build record to:

Chrysler Historical Collection
CIMS 410-11-21
12501 Chrysler Freeway
Detroit,Michigan
48288

Include your VIN# with your request and a self addressed stamp envelope. Not sure how long it will take, but worth a shot if they have it on record.

My understanding is that they have nothing after 1967, but I suppose it couldn't hurt.

To the OP, again, unless you were born with horseshoes up your rear, previous owners are really the only shot you have of getting any more information (assuming, of course there isn't a BS still hidden in the car somewhere).
