What are the application differences between the 3" and 3-1/2"?

Looks like the 3" long, 2996857 (power), 2996856 (manual) is very common.
Part numbers 2530538 - 2530538 - 2800705 - 2800706 - 2800741 - 2996857 - 3420152 - 3420153 - 3879914 are also 3".
Fits 67-72 A bodies, 70-72 E bodies, 66-72 B Bodies, 70-71 Y Bodies

Looks like the 3-1/2" long, part# ?, may be 73-76 A Bodies, 73-76 B Bodes, 73-74 E Bodies, truck?, C body?

Haven't been able to nail any solid info on the long one.

Thanks!

Judging from all the cars I have torn down over the years, it looks like the longer ones started in 1974 across all car lines. All the 73 and back cars had the shorter ones from what I can tell.
