I'm rebuilding a 46RH out of a 1995 Jeep with a 5.2L motor. I was cleaning the Governor and noticed that the small inner governor weight is mushroomed where it looks like it has been beating against the output shaft of the trans. I had to grind the inner weight to remove it from the outer weight. I haven't ran into anything that seems too out of the ordinary yet. I am going to replace the weights, but I was wondering if anyone has an idea of what would cause this damage. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response. This is my first time rebuilding a 500/518 so I wanted to make sure it wasn't part of a bigger issue.

If the inner weight is made of aluminum it's not uncommon to see them peened over, many replace them with a steel part.

I just bought a good used governor and am going to put the overdrive the rest of the way together. The overdrive portion has a lot of parts, but if you have done transmissions, it's pretty strait forward. The spring is pretty stout. I used an arbor press to compress it.

Thanks . maybe doing one soon!
there is a special tool made to compress the spring and access the retaining ring and you need an alignment tool to keep the internal splines in alignment while doing it , I got them from miller spx , not that expensive .

it is alot easier to emplace the OD unit with the intermediate shaft in place onto the press and slowly/gently remove the (fully seated) intermediate shaft out of the unit and then press the OD unit and emplace the retainer rings to lock it into place.
the reason being is that the Miller alignment tool does not have the circular piece cast into the end of it that fits into the lower bushing on the OD unit. If the alignment is off, just a smidgeon, you may think you have the entire thing lined up.. assemble your tailshaft housing, mate it up to the primary housing and attempt to assemble your trans, just to find out the intermediate shaft will not seat the entire way down. Hence, the rear drum rear planetary set will not seat fully and every other piece will be out of whack from there on.
I am sure other trans guys have other remedies to this situation, but every OD unit I have done, I have done it this way and absolutely have had no fitment issues whatsoever. IOW, I have made the miller alignment tool into a paperweight.

How many hours would you say it would take to rebuild a trans on a 96 318 4x4 1500? Mine is slipping into 2nd. Have rebuilt a a833 4 speed. But i hear this is a whole new animal. Also what all tools do you guys use. thanks
I would say 8 hours total.. and that is cleaning every part by hand and the total disassembly and cleaning of the valve body. That is taking your time, lubing every component appropriately and following the complete torque sequence for each and every bolt/nut/screw.
Tools needed: front clutch piston compressor, snap ring pliers, OD unit compression tool, press, small flathead screwdriver, c-clamps, long/needle nose pliers. (what is nice to have is a 727/904 transmission mount so that you can work on the trans in a stable environment, but is not needed).
Lubricants needed: transmission lube (or vaseline), loctite, liquid pipe thread, dexron III/ATF+4
others please chime in

thanks , I didn't notice that aboutthe shaft , sounds like something that could be easily remedied on the tool though .
I got lucky i guess when I did mine .

I used the intermediate shaft trick to align the od sprag hub and planetary, too. I used a piece of tubing over the intermediate shaft in the press to compress the return spring and install the clutch pack. I'm not and expert, but I've rebuilt my share of transmissions. The 518 internals are very similar to the 727 and I haven't found it much more difficult to work on.
