Ok, I got a new to me 1990 4x4 Dakota with the 3.9 v6/auto. Truck runs pretty good, still needs a tune-up, filters and fluids. Anyway, the trans is acting funny, when it is put into reverse, it will start to move then stop or if it starts moving it will start to jerk around. It will go if the gas is applied but has a hard time moving/going. The other funny thing is it has no neutral setting, it will go from reverse straight into drive! All fwd gears shift like they are suppose to and can be manually shifted too. It will engine brake while shifting the gears down and slow the truck like it should. I have started my investigation and have come up with nothing. At first I thought it was the rear drums binding, nope, pulled the drums and the actually needed adjusted. Pulled the drive shaft and checked the diff and u-joints, still nothing. Then with the drive shaft off, I started the truck and it would do the same thing...so it must be the transfer case or the trans itself. I also put the transfer case in neutral and it would still do the same as before. The transfer case does have fluid. I plan on pulling the trans pan this weekend, changing the fluid and filter and checking the band adjustments. So, does anybody have a clue?

If you have ALL the forward gears the problem is likely with the forward clutch pack. It sounds like it is not releasing for some reason. If I were to guess, the forward clutch pack is probably fried. The clutches and steels will be either severely warped or possibly welded together. I'd pull the pan and see how much debris is in the pan. If there is a bunch of trash lying in the bottom, it's going to be rebuild time.

Forward clutch pack is not the same as the front clutch pack. He actually means the rear clutch pack which is engaged in all forward gears. It is released in neutral and reverse. The front clutch pack is engaged in reverse, 3rd and O/D.

"Forward Clutch" is a GM/Ford term. tsk Please try to speak only Mopar here.

So if I have to rebuild it, it's a 42rh or 500a correct?
