I am installing A999 parts in my tranny and just assembled the 5 disk direct clutch. Spec calls for .075-.152 pack clearance and I am getting .090" with the thinnest (.060") selective ring.

Is more clearance beneficial to reduce drag in 1st and 2nd?? I suppose I could slip a thin forward disk in place of the thicker direct disk and gain about .025".

My direct pack measures .040" which I think is fine.

I think it's less of a drag thing and more of an engagement timing thing. With more springs working against the piston, I don't think less clearance is a big deal. But if you are running 9 or ten springs on the piston, that would be too tight. I'm sure others can correct me if I'm mistaken.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Well unlike a 727 the stock 904 uses a single coil spring to push back the direct piston but I upgraded to the A&A multi spring setup.

That figure's to be a .018 clearance per clutch which isn't bad, but if you can tighten it up a little with a thicker snap ring that would be even better, I have set mine up as tight as .065, but mine see's strip duty only, .040 on the direct clutch will be good, and smart move on the multi spring retainer.

Your 0.090" is just fine. Normally no need for any more, IMO. I run a 727 with 5 clutch discs and 0.075-0.085. I have run 0.060" and that is geting on the tight side with 5 discs. Some people like a lot of clearance, but not me.

Springs, line pressure, clearance, etc can also be used for some shift timing adjustment. As well as changing the release of the 2nd gear band.

about .030-.040 for the forwards but i would set the direct to .060 or as close as you could get them direct it the drum the band rides on and forward is the drum with shaft.also set the front band to 1 1/4 turn from snug with a 4.2 lever and rear band to 1.75-2 turns.

I could definately get the direct pack tighter with a thicker ring but I was worried it was on the low side to begin with.

I previously ran 5 A&A thins in a 4 clutch drum and clearance was very close to the low limit and I think I had some 2-3 overlap issues. Perhaps running what I have now with a little more clearance would do fine.

you can help the overlap by a band adjustment, to a point,,,but you should be in pretty good shape where you are at now.
