My duster has a a999 out of a 85 dodge pu that has worked great for awhile until last weekend the converter hub broke. Had the converter fixed, removed front pump and cleaned it, installed new gasket, o-ring, bushing and seal.

Just fired it up, nothing! wont go into gear. Also the drive line will not rotate, its like the trans is stuck in park.

Did i knock something loose when i was removing the front pump? going to drop the pan tomm. Thanks in advance, daniel

When you had the pump out, did you check the drive lugs on the inner pump gear? If they were broken when the convertor hub let go, there would be no drive to the pump and no oil pressure.

hi, thanks for your reply, the pump looked great. I had to stake the new bushing in and that was the main reason to pull the pump. I got lucky and the piece that broke off the converter hub was large. Does the trans have to be upright when you pull the pump? I had the trans on the bench when i used a slide hammer to pulled the pump.

No, it doesn't have to be upright but it makes it easier and keeps the clutch units from falling out of place. If you are sure the lugs were intact and not cracked and the unit has enough oil in it, then I'd suggest attaching a pressure gauge to the main pressure port on the trans and see if you have any pressure. If not, then it's possible that the convertor wasn't fully seated in the pump gear before the trans was installed. That would mean the pump is likely toast at this point. If you have pressure, then the spline in the convertor that engages the input shaft may have stripped and then you have no drive into the trans.

Just thought of one other thing. Unlike the 727, the 904/999 oil pump is two seperate halves that need to be aligned when reassembling. If they are not aligned, the pump may not fully seat in the case. If the pump is not fully seated, there would be a huge internal oil leak at the pump gasket which would mean no main pressure as well.

ok, will do a pressure check. What is making me think there is issue with the linkage inside the trans is that when you disconnect the driveline from the rearend and place the trans in neutral and try and turn the driveline it doesnt move, feeld like it is in park.

When you had the pump out, did you have the valve body out as well? Does the shift lever move freely at the trans if you disconnect the linkage? When you refilled the trans after install, how much oil did it take and did the level drop when you started the engine?

Here's what I would suggest. First, make sure the oil level is correct and then take a pressure reading. If they are both fine, then drop the pan and move the shift lever while watching the manual valve in the valve body to make sure it moves with the lever. If that is fine, then it's time to pull the trans out again.

if you removed the front pump..

after re-assembling the trans did you see if you could turn the input shaft by hand??

if one of the clutch packs moved foward, and was not reset or checked to make sure everything was engaged properly...the trans is binding...

also..you have to make sure the converter engages correctly into the pump...

it is alot easier to get everything to fall into place if the trans is on its end..

PC_Charger-left the valvebody in, shift lever moves with linkage removed, poured over a qt in the converter prior it fitting it, 3 qts or so in trans before i fired it up, dipstick shows full running in neutral

i think you might be right about the binding, the converter seemed hard to turn by hand when i was lining up the flexplate bolts. to be honest i never really had any serious trans problems in any of my cars and i might of hurried through some important steps, i guess i can take my time the second time around
