I'm a big block guy. All I know is low deck and raised deck. What is the difference between all of these small blocks? I know there is the small bore, small journal (273, 318), large bore small journal (340), medium bore, large journal (360), 5.2 and 5.9 magnum as far as production pieces. I here R3, R5 and lifter angles thrown around from time to time. It sure seems like there is a large variety of blocks to choose from. Can someone give me a quick run down to get me up to speed?

R3 has 48* & 59* lifter angle. 3 deck heights, 9", 9.200 & 9.600. Priority oiling.

... And either 2.25" (302 ford diameter), 2.50 (318,340), or 2.810 (360) main diameters.

Until a few years ago, I didn't realize that 48 degree blocks not only have a different lifter angle, but also changed lifter spacing for intake pushrod clearance... A clear benefit of a 48 degree block that is very infrequently mentioned.

So, you really have to know what intake you are buying. Can blocks be bored for larger diameter cranks, or do you guys cut down the mains on the big journals for weight savings?
