I've seen too many coolant passages in old(er) vehicles full of sludge and funk and wasn't expecting much better for my Dakota, so imagine my surprise when I pulled the pump and found this:

CLEAN!!

Truck has about 165K on it. The pump wasn't leaking, but the bearing was going out. The Fan/pulley could be rocked quite a bit (not to mention the noise it was making no ). It was pretty obvious the pump had been replaced once already, but I have no idea how many miles were on it. I installed a new Murray brand pump.

Hard to believe I've owned this thing a little over a year already. Yeah, it still has its little quirks, and will proably always need some work, but its been stone cold reliable and I enjoy driving it.

Mine too was clean. Nearly same miles at 170,000. Two years and the water pump and front brake rotors were the only repairs! These are great trucks!

Most of the Dakotas I've had (10 or so) have collected all the cooling system junk in the heater core. After the several with no heat, I started back-flushing the cores every fall.
