Discussed a few months ago. It isn't in the same class as the engines in Ram trucks, it's a V8 that's more light duty.
Story is, Nissan was going to sell Dodge 1500s as Titans but the deal fell through with Fiat so Nissan designed the new truck themselves. No talk of whose Diesel engines they'd use
Sometime later, Cummins pitched the 5.0 V8 to Dodge, but it didn't meet Dodge's mpg requirements so Dodge said "No". Cummins then went to see Nissan and Toyota. Both said "Yes". The Nissan got to market first. 310 hp and 555 lb-ft torque are pretty good, and the Titan is rated to tow 12,000 lb. It's not competing with the Ram 2500/3500 and the Super Dutys but aimed at folks who want a little more truck than a half-ton, but not one of those behemoths. R.

HP TQ or MPG aside it was INSANE! for dodge not to use that engine, the name cummins alone will sell TONS of trucks, especially if toyota does end up useing them, nissan and toyota are going to enter the truck market like dodge did in 94 with the big rig body styling that EVERY truck maker is useing now days in some form or another. Don't get me wrong the VM Motori seems to be holding up so far but who in america ever heard of them? Name recognition alone is priceless, no other diesel has the reputation even close to the cummins, there is huge aftermarket support to replace both the isuzu and internationals in chubby and ferds because of it. This will go down as one of the great automotive blunders of all time like Datsun changing into nissan, this is going to be their chance to finnaly redeem that 30 years later.

It's a clean sheet build collaboration between Nissan and Cummins. It is all aluminum and build specifically for Nissan...Cummins is not selling it for use anywhere else as of now. That alone would make me leary. I work on lots of Dodge Cummins in the shop here, so I go to Cummins quite a bit for parts. Let me say they are less than thrilled. I'll stick with the bulletproof inline cast iron 6B series and leave the aluminum toys to Chevy, Ford, and, now Nissan.

Any one have the sales numbers for dodge from 93 to 94? Seems I heard sales went up around 10X. Get something a truck buyer wants and people will open their wallet (or more commonly now go into debt).

For me it all boils down to what do the BIG trucks run? Mostly IL6 diesels, some v8 diesels are fine, but even with the cummins name on it it could be a stinker! Every engine maker has stepped it it a time or three and first generation engines IMHO are questionable! Four or five years from now they may have the bugs worked out same with the eco diesel not sure I want the first one! Look how long it took to "fix" the 6.7 Cummins!
