Working on M37 project. Going to swap in a 360 from an 89 dodge 3/4 ton. Using a NP435 and the existing M37 divorced transfer case. Deciding whether to keep the TBI or swap to carb. I have the harness and computer. My question is are there any connections going to the trans or transfer case I need for the TBI? just starting to get into it and understand the system. Is there a speed sensor or anything that is needed? If so will something need to be mounted to the NP435?

Keep the carb. Or swap to a Magnum fuel injection system, but probably better to keep the carb. The Dodge TBI isn't that great

No speed sensor needed, no trans signal needed except neutral or ground it and you can start in any gear. However you could control a 44rh or 46rh with the 89 computer but it is not nessacary to make it run right. I have never had much trouble with the dodge TBI, I think it got a bad rep. because it was our first EFI and no one understood it so it got a bad reputation as impossible to diag and fix. The only bad thing is it does not take kindly to much modifications. If you are happy with the power it makes then I say go for it, if you need more than a dual exhaust, high flow air cleaner, very minor porting and milling then you need a carb or aftermarket EFI.

You could put a Chevy TBI on it, lots of aftermarket support for those and decent size throttle bodies

Thanks for all the info. I have the complete setup, ran well. When I bought the truck the PO said it leaked oil from everywhere but turned out to be a rusted oil filter. Plans are to keep stock except for maybe a set of headers so I think the existing setup would be fine. No plans to switch to any other type of injection, it's this or a four barrel.

If you swap to headers and keep the tbi, you will want to add the bung for the O2 sensor into the exhaust pipe.

I don't have any issues with the 90 tbi in my 48 Plymouth coupe. Gene

The o2 sensor is not heated so it don't work real well with headers. Headers have TONS of surface area and are very thin compared to the factory manifolds so by the time the exhaust reaches an o2 sensor in the collector it is not hot enough to work real good. Without a properly working o2 you risk running lean as it will revert back to the base fuel map and the free flowing exhaust is now helping more air come in the engine and no way to add more fuel. If you have to have headers get good ceramic coated ones.

Why not switch to a heated o2 sensor? They are not costly .

True, and they just need one extra 12V wire, hot in Run.

The Rochester TBI has been scienced to the max and can support 300hp easily. The computers are easy to tune as well.

The Mag engine needs a speed sensor because it uses a much more sophisticated control system that shuts off injectors while coasting, etc. There is no comparison between the two.

I just got rid of the TB1 on my 88 Dodge d250, it was a POS. Using a eddy performer intake, HEI two distributor and headers. I removed the computer and 10 miles of wiring from under the hood including the computer.

This project is almost complete except for the new lokar throttle cable and installing new exhaust from the header back which should be done this weekend.

Pretty easy to bypass computer and hook up regular alternator, used a mopar starter relay switch to control the starter. Used a couple of relays to provide voltage for the electric fuel pump and ignition.

Biggest delay was going back to work and all the other car projects.
