take off at least one brake shoe so you can remove the horizontle E brake bar so the axle retainer has room to come out. You can put a drum on backward & use it as a slide hammer (within reason) but keep close tabs on the bearing retainer as it has come off of the studs evenly (& the retainer is the area that will be tight) & you might very carefully pry it slightly as needed to keep it coming off of the studs evenly (take your time there as that is a problem area & you dont want to mess that assy up). You SURE you cant ID the stud as that'd sure be easier than the alternative? EDIT or drive it out & take it in & on that unless it pops out with an easy hammer tap I like to have something behind the stud (socket etc) back to solid ground so the flange ain't subject to being bent depending how hard I have to whack it (& I like to have that setup before! I pick up the hammer!)

8 1/4 rears use C clips. Remove the diff cover and then turn the rear until you see the retainer bolt that holds the cross shaft. Remove the bolt and then turn the rear enough so you can slide out the cross shaft. Now you have room to push the axles in towards the center and remove the C clips. Once the clips are removed, you can slide the axles out. Be careful not to let anything drop out of place when you remove the cross shaft. what he said. If it is a open rear something may drop out of place but a sure grip will be fine.

RR that works great AFTER you take the rear end cover off and remove center pin from the carrier and C-Clips from the axle ends. Yeah I just ASSuME'd that he would take care of the C clip situation first
