I bought the Electrical Ignition Conversion Kit (1-P3690428) for my 71 Charger with a 440. It came with a distributor. I finally got around to putting in the distributor this after but when I slid it in I found that it didn't go all the way to the base like I was expecting. I am finding the the rubber ring is part way in the hole but there is a gap between the engine and the metal base of the distributor. Am I missing something or as long as the rubber ring is partway engaged it is considered a good fit?

Are you sure it's all the way Down? I think the new o-ring is holding it up at the lip of the whole. Put a tiny bit of grease on the o-ring, you can put the hold down on and tighten it up a little. It should pop right in. If the shaft truly is to long (which I don't like so), it definitely will not work.

Thats the ticket. I put a little engine oil on the hole and oring and a little elbow grease and in it went. Thanks for the assist.

I ran in to that myself a while back. Is it a aftermarket oring? Aftermarket orings seem to be a bit thicker for some reason. If it is to hard to turn try a OEM or NOS one if can can find one.

Superformance Products has the correct O-ring.

For others who run into this a little grease works but also turning it back and forth while pushing down helps more than just pushing it straight in....

There is also a small paperlike gasket under the mounting flange, it is the same size for SB and BB. I made mine, it is 2.4" in OD and 2.0 ID. It was great to find mmy old set of Compasses and Dividers that I saved from my Jr. High Mechanical Drawing class.

If you make that gasket use very thin material, too thick & it'll reduce the intergear slot/dist tang fit & will increase slop there (you'll see it as spark scatter)

I had not thought of that issue, good tip, thanks. I just need some thinner bulk gasket material.

if the o ring seals, which that one will with a dab of grease like was previously mentioned, no gasket is necessary or needed.

Big Ag, why don't you take the O ring off all together and see if indeed that is the problem. It may be your intermediate shaft is not fully down.

You don't need any gasket material at all.The O-ring was used to replace the O.E.M. steel gasket that originated in the late 50's,the fiber/paper is after market, picture of each attached .If you have the "correct" O-ring,it may be a little difficult to seat but it will not leak. As far as buying O-rings from a parts house, there are both standard and metric, you can easily end up with the wrong one. twocents

VG info, I'd take the o ring off & check tang fit as is (that dist seats all the way) & that be an excellent time to take 3 seconds & lightly twist the rotor back & forth to check tang rotational play (which is a seperate issue). As said highly likely it is the O ring as their fit is notoriously bad. hold the dist up in front of you at eye level & see how far out it protrudes from the groove it sets in. get another O ring or barely deburr the OD surface. for the flat gaskets the yellowish one in Maxs' pic on the left is OE, its thin/metal/has a raised bead in the middle that you can see in the pic. Short version: highly likely the O ring is too fat

The more time I spend on this site the more I learn. Now I just have to clean off the gasket I made (too thick) and glued in place with 3M WS Adhesive and find a couple of the proper O'Rings. I gave one to a friend for his 360 Dart when we installed the FBO timing limiter. Fortunately, I have the Race dist in hand and can walk it into the local NAPA store where I can buy an assortment of O'Rings.

The yellow gorilla snot, just be greatfull that you did not use "the right stuff" gasket maker! EDIT I think a 3/32 thick and 2" O ring is close but I'd do as you said take the dist in
