I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 8 1/4 differential with 2.45 gears is a different case and other gears can't be swapped into it.

Is this correct? Are there any modifications that can be done to swap different gears?

Thanks,
ken

Not the case, the carrier is different. You can swap new gears AND carrier in, Sure Grip time I am thinking.

Don't be the exception.

Measure to be sure. A guy on another board tried swapping 3.55's into a case that was 2.45 and could not get the ring gear anywhere close to the pinion with either carrier. Hard telling what he was actually doing though.

The difference is in the carrier . . . the rest of the housing is ok for other gears . . .

Some 2.45 and 2.2 geared 8.25" rears are not clearanced properly for the standard carrier's offset and the Ring gear will hit inside the housing. It just needs to be ground down to allow clearance if that is the case. Mine had no such problem and the clearance issue seems to be fairly rare.
