I know this is sorta *off topic* and I hail from the enemy camp, but being a S/S junkie I've been following this thread from the beginning and noticed a couple folks wondering exactly *how* the 'Vettes got into SS/A or what *politics* were involved...I realize that for '06 the NHRA is allowing folks to play class musical chairs of sorts (which I'm not sure I like or not, yet), but while there aren't a lot of them campaigned there were some SS/A Chevrolet combos originally.
Anyway, for those of you brave souls still with me, here's Chevy's SS/A offerings (that is from '70 on when A was 6.00-6.49), and I pulled the "back then" info from my vintage NHRA class guide:
Back Then: '67 L71/L89 (427/435hp, 3x2 carbs, al. heads) = 6.21 @ 495hp '67 L88 (427/430hp, 1x4 carb, al. heads) = 6.33 @ 480hp '68 L71/L89 (427/435hp, 3x2 carbs, al. heads) = 6.32 @ 495hp
Today: '67 L71/L89 (427/435hp, 3x2 carbs, al. heads) = 6.41 @ 495hp '68 L71/L89 (427/435hp, 3x2 carbs, al. heads) = 6.32 @ 495hp
Somewhere along the way they lost the L88 combo? Also, I hate to detract from this great thread, but I would like to hear if any of the above combos are running out there? THANKS!

Yes, there WAS a 67 L88 vette owned by Scott Wilcox that ran SS/A back in the late 80's/early 90's. The car was very successful and never outrun by any hemi's back then, but after some sniveling by those seeing too much of the vette's back bumper NHRA decided that there were not enough of those cars built to be legal, even though that car had already been running for several years.

Thanks for the info, Rick! While the L88 always got the rep as being the Corvette bad boy (except for the ZL1), I've always felt that while the 435hp engine while lacking a bit on cam lift (~.040"), made up for it on the induction side with the 3x2 carbs...and NHRA must agree to some point, to hang it with a 495 rating? But then again, what do I know! On the subject of SS/AH cars, around 2 years ago a local feller here brought me a couple of polaroids of an original '68 Hemi 'Cuda in a guy's garage...I'd heard of the car for years (story was guy was a logger/sawmiller, bought the car originally, had it ever since, was known to be involved in shady deals) but never knew if it was real unti the guy showed up with pictures...I checked 'em out, got some info on the car (VIN was a good one), and was trying to figure out how to scrape up the 50-large + finders fee for it...but I drug my feet, I saw the thing on Ebay but don't think it got over like $30k and didn't meet reserve...the car was in western Kentucky...was wearing a red/white/blue paint scheme...anyone know if someone snatched it up, or do I need to take a drive?

Hi Rob, welcome to this thread,I know that some of the SS/AH guys want to race with the vettes, last year they had a race with a shootout and I think only two of the SS/ah guys would race in that shootout,But the warfish won and he did run with the vettes,I also am suprise more people are not builting cars for the SS/AA class, with them going 8.65 and pancake going 8.55 this would be great heads up racing. I am a mopar lover, but I also think they should race all comers.

I totally agree with this! Don't get me wrong, the SS/AH cars are rediculously cool, but I don't see anything wrong with variety? But don't go making up combos just so cars can run though, either.
And, I was digging through my old class guide the other day, and I see NHRA doesn't show these combos any more, but just how SICK would a 427 Cobra be in S/S? I mean, the friggin' SMALL BLOCK carried like a 5.7x factor, and the 427 had rediculous a 3.5 or something factor! (I'll try and look up the actual factors in the morning) Talk about a handful...

The cobras ARE legal, and ARE listed in the NHRA class guide the last time I looked. , but who in their right mind is going to hack up one of those. but most of the SS/A cars are clones anyway, hmmmmmmmm

Ahhh...so they are! I had in my head the Shelby had their own section, but now it looks like they're lumped in with the Fords...but who has enough coin to build one!

the 155.87mph is a record that will be around for awhile.
Bella rose shootout is going to be a fast race.I just hope more cars show up than they have so far. This may make alot them stay home until indy.

I wondered what was up when my buddy said some Vette's were racing the SS/AA cars at Maplegrove in PA last year ? And he said Wescott won. And I had to work that weekend. 8.55 @ 155 is awesome. Let the SS/AH war begin as I love the SS cars. Ron

I have to post this again because its early in the season and the other post by Craig seems to think that history was made in atco by Jim pancake,Jim did make a very good run at Atco and set the record for the class, and my hat is off to him and his team,But last year stats with Harry Holton record at 8.56 would just say thats the best run so far this year.
So History NO Great Run Yes and he has never made a run at 159mph as reported in Craig posts.
Julie, thanks for posting your reply on that thread, just makes me wonder why he didn't post here.

Hi Julie, Fred had Charlie engine in the car,he was the only one that show up for SS/AH. No sense in beating the car up for a single. He also found out his issue with the car.and is fixing it,had to do with the crank trigger kept changing the timming.
