I am getting in the process of putting together a 470 low deck,
and the block is getting sent to the machinist soon. I have seen some oiling modifications to the block to alter the oiling to the heads. my question is, when are those mods needed? My engine will never see above 6500 rpm, and it will be driven on the street.

push rod oiling or shaft oiling? only oiling mod's that I have done were to the galley to main bearing's by opening them up from .250 to .281,, you can go from timed oiling to 360* oiling for the valve train by either grooving the cam journal or the bearing and adding restrictors in the oil port just below the shaft, that way you can adjust the amount of oil to the rockers fairly easily.

Most important oiling issue on BB Mopar engines is to make sure that the oil passages from the main gallery to the mains are open. Sometimes the factory drilling process didn't fully cleanup the holes. If those holes are all clear then that should be all you need for street type engine.

I was more concerned with shaft oiling, I have seen a mod where the cam bearing is moved to block off the passage to the heads, then it is plumbed in from the oil pressure port at the back of the block.

That is done to increase the oil volume to #4 main and the rods it feeds. It is not required for sufficient oil supply to the rockers. As Andy said, you should be fine with the stock system in a street application.

What type of cam and valve spring pressures are you going to run? if flat tappet, solid or hydraulic, stock oiling is fine. If solid roller with lots of valve spring pressure make sure and oil the rockers full time to help oil the valves springs for better cooling them thumbs

that is exactly what I am doing to my SB circle track 360, turned #2 & #4 cam bearings to block the passage(s) then I drilled down into the angled passages (1) on each side of the valley then straight down further into the main horizontle oil galleries then I capped the (2) upper holes in the angled passage(s) with 1/8 NPT pipe plugs that I just drilled the holes in to access the main galleries underneath then tapped the 2 oil holes in the upper decks for a 5/16-18 set screw in each & I just ain't decided how big a hole to drill in the setscrews but it'll likely be either 1/16 or .080" for full time oiling to the rocker shafts. You might go to www.moparchat.com then scroll down to and click on "circle track chat" then peruse Sanborns' oiling mods that are in a sticky at the top of the page (SB stuff but alot carries over) and Herb McCandless had some BB oiling mods tho I dont know who has it posted but it is out there and go to www.forabodiesonly.com then scroll down in the "forums" sections & click on "small block mopar engines" & read Guitar Jones" oiling mods that are in a sticky at the top of the page (some bleeds over to Sanborns' stuff). Reportedly BB's have fairly good oiling routing as is & for a 6500 RPM street app such as yours is I think you are pretty close. If you read all that material you will have your answeres and alot of ideas/plans (you asked for it!)

For your street eng this is all it needs. Thats basically all I have done to my 440/493 street eng that I race sometimes. Its a stock oiling system with the oil pump passage opened to 1/2" and all the other oil holes that you can get to checked to be open. I did open my oil passage to the pump up to 1/2" but even that does not have to be done for an average street eng. I dont run mine hard on the street but when I race it I run it hard. I shift around 6200 and trap about 6400. Ron
