Sorry,I know this has been asked a million times. What cam would you recommend for a 1999 360 magnum going in 1974 Duster with headers, 4 barrel carb, factory high stall converter, 3.21 gears. Would you recommend a split pattern or single pattern also?

Same specs as the stock 340 cam in 1968-71 maybe a little more duration if you don't need vacuum. It's a good all around cam. Get to low on the vacuum and you'll have to work over the carb. A no headache cam.

Single pattern for me, the Mag exhaust port doesn't need a split pattern cam.

I'd pick a Hughes 218 lobe for both intake and exhaust, ground on a 110 LSA. This has 0.539 calculated lift with the Mag 1.6 rockers.

If you're going Mag, then go hydraulic roller as it's easy to get there when starting with a Mag engine.

I think this cam with your setup would be killer.

Here is what I put in mine from Hughes
.544 lift with 1.6 rockers
218/228 duration
110 lobe separation

Very nice street cam with about a 2400 stall. The car turns 12.95 and weighs 4200 lbs. 3.55 gears btw.

What intake?

What carb?

How do you want it to behave idle and HP wise? OD or 3 spd auto?

I like single pattern with the magnum heads unless you want to roughen up the idle for no good reason.

Lift and duration gonna depend on a lot of things not mentioned yet.

I will probably redrill the heads and use a 1971 340 intake that I already have. I have both 650 and 800 spread bore holleys to try, plus a big bore thermo quad also. Trans is 727 with 340 torque converter, I assume stall is around 2400. I would like good low end torque, a slight lope would be ok but not necessary. Fun street car, no track time.

I stick by my choice in your application. Or have Bullet or Delta regrind your stock cam with as much lobe as they can get on it. But I'd stick single pattern.

Would 218 degrees at .050 lift be too much for a 2400 stall torque converter and 3.21 rear gears? This will be a regrind from Delta or Oregon cams. Tight budget.

You are talking hydraulic roller, right?
IMHO it'll work just fine.
I believe the stock 5.9 hydraulic roller has 114 or 115 LSA and increasing the duration that much will limit the amount the LSA can be narrowed. That will work in your favor, reducing overlap which will tame the idle and off-idle roughness, allowing a lower stall speed converter to work just fine. It will sacrifice a little midrange torque over my choice of the narrower LSA but probably work better in daily driving.

Yes, it will be hydraulic roller.

Should be fine. I'm running a 222/228, 107 lsa installed at 104 (whiplash cam). Lots of torque, good drivability, chops at idle, but only has 9" of vacuum.

My vacuum booster hasn't complained and I have plenty of power assist available.

Made 285 rwhp through a manual trans with stock heads. Pushed my 4000 lb truck to traction limited 14.5s at 99 mph.

Yes, single pattern and 110 LSA almost the exact cam I use in most of my street builds, had one in a 1/2 ton 4x4 with 3.21s and it was ok with the stock converter, a little more stall, little shorter tire and a whole lot less weight should be awesome. I have delta re-grind mine

HotRodDave, What are the specs on the cam you use? And how much does Delta charge to regrind a roller cam for you?

Any other opinions on cam choice? Is Hughes the only source for magnum valve springs?

Is there something wrong with this cam? It is in a car with success. It is not speculative.

Years ago then Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorta said that he had asked the engineering team to investigate what fuel economy improvement would be had if the then non-variable camshaft profiles were optimized for economy rather than peak horsepower.

The answer came back six percent according to LaSorta.

I wonder what the max torque in the 1400 to 2400 rpm range would be on a max economy camshaft?

What does Delta or Bullet charge to regrind a Magnum camshaft?
