Hi was wonder what oil most guys are using on a new rebuilt 440 stroker (507). What oil weight and brand to use?

If the engine was built with normal clearances then I'll say that it doesn't matter much. Use a typical factory recommended oil which would probably be a 10-30. Maybe a tad heavier in summer and a touch lighter in winter if you actually drive it in the winter. Any name brand should be fine.

It depends quite a bit on your engine. Does it have a flat tappet cam? If so, it needs extra zinc. How about bearing type and clearance? That affects viscosity.

A good starting point would be one of the high zinc versions of 10W30 like Comp Cams break in oil. The see how the oil pressure behaves. My personal guideline is 20 psi at hot idle on a fresh engine. If it gets there with 10W30 great. If not, step up to a higher viscosity.

I run Rotella T 15W40 + STP on my 496 flat tappet. Pressure was borderline with 10W30.

We really like the Brad Penn Oil...A lot. Shows so little wear on parts season after season. We typically run 10-40 in mild engines and 20-50 in race engines.

I started and broke mine in on Brad Penn straight 30W because it is one of the highest with Zinc content. Then after that been using Brad Penn 20W-50.

I used Joe Gibbs break in oil to break in the flat tappet cam. Then I ran Joe Gibbs Hot Rod oil 15w40. Check out there website for more detail.

On all the street and strip stroker motors I build with either a solid roller lifter or hydraulic roller lifter I use Valvoline 5W 20WT non synthetic oil thumbs There are better and worst oils out there, that Valvoline oil has worked well for me for a lot of years so far with no additives thumbs
On non roller lifter motors I use Comp Cams zinc oil additive on every oil change thumbs Lucas and Red Line sell a zinc additive also as well as a lot of other brands out there that work well so use the one you like the most thumbs

I use Rotello 15/40 with a zinc additive with my stroker

My friend had a blueprint engine from Summit. Brke it in with high zinc, then switched to synthetic. Ruined the cam in a couple thousand miles. Keep zinc in the oil....

Ask the engine builder that put it together. He knows what clearances it has, and most likely has a preferred weight and brand.

Broke in my old 440 with Vr1 break in oil, then used cheap rural king 10w-40 ever since. Pulled the motor after 10k for a hemi swap, looked at the flat tappet cam and lifters, still brand new. I never used a zinc additive or high zinc oil. If you break your motor in properly, you shouldn't have problems.

I don't have the race experience of some other guys on this board, however I am an Amsoil fan. They make an oil called Z-Rod which as you may guess by the name, is aimed at flat tappet engines. An oil analysis I read at one point showed it had very high levels of zinc in(higher than VR1 and Joe Gibbs), it as well as some other additive that helps prevent corrosion during long term storage.

That's some good stuff. I'm thinking of switching in the GTS.
