dont buy unless it is imaculate and super cheap like $500 max. Then find a wrecked 2.4 stratus/sebring and swap every thing in including trans and harness computer... if you have a grey key you will need to get the 2.4 computer programmed with the VIN for the car you are fixing.
The 2.7 is very difficult to find a good one in a JY, a lot of times they will not give you even a 30daywarranty because they know what a pile of garbage they are. It is not worth fixing as a 2.7 car. You would have to be in love with it to even do the 4 cyl swap.

Funny you ask about this today as I just had one of my customers cars in the shop who I did this for, they busted up the rear suspension pulling it out of a snow bank.
Everything bolts in but there is a lot of stuff to bolt in. Basically what I do is drop the entire suspension and all out and swap it all with the engine/trans still in the suspension. Unless you have a good relationship with a close by JY it is best to get a wrecked but complete car for a donor because just when you think you got everything you will make about 20 more trips back.

Most of this has already been covered, but just in case something was missed............
The 2.7 is an expensive and difficult engine to repair with no guarantees that you caught all the gremlins. Check price and availability on EVERYTHING you will need for the thing before you start on it.
It is a BIG, BIG job to swap to the 4 banger and there are a ton of pieces to change. Everything goes in from the bottom....everything. But yes, they will swap.
I would only recommend trying this if you have a LOT of time on your hands, a good place to do this that can be tied up for a good amount of time, and have ready access to the donor car because you will make a bunch of trips for parts.
Frankly, an 01 is probably not worth the trouble. Especially if your time is worth anything.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Master, again and still
