Having some issues with starting the Jeep. Dash lights go very dim, and it cranks slowly. I have replaced the battery, cleaned the battery cables, and had to replace the starter, since one of the terminals broke off. I just bought a salvage yard starter, but it tested good. The battery is new, and should easily be enough to spin the motor over quickly. Could the alternator be about to give up the ghost?

Take the Jeep to the local major parts store and have them check out the starting and charging system. Most do it for free.

Check your grounds. A quick way to check is with a set of good jumper cables. Hook both leads on the same end to the negative post of the battery and then hook one of the other leads to the engine block and the other to the body, such as the radiator core support. Then try cranking the vehicle. if it cranks normal you have a ground issue. I see a lot of Jeeps with negative battery terminals bad with corrosion between the wires and the terminal. Hope this helps.

I believe the Jeep is suffering from a bad ground. Given the age and miles, I would like to replace the battery cables. Is this a big job?

It's easier than a starter swap. Just eyeball the cables to see what you need to do. Just remember to hook the battery up last. biggrin
