After you stop laughing, maybe some of you can help I have been on the fence about racing the Div 7 Summit Series this year, but the ET Finals are up the street at Firebird. I want to race cheap, so Sportsman in a car on pumpgas it will be. I have ALOT of stuff and I keep hitting snags on plans. Now the first race is a few weeks away and I need to get something rolling. Sorry for the rant, but here is the ????

I have a 68 Valiant post with a decent running 225/auto. What do you think it would run box stock? I have plenty of gears I can swap into an 8 3/4 and I can build a trans with a VB and a low gearset. I also have a header and a offy 4bbl intake. It has to run 19 flat (maybe 19.90)or faster to make the index. Any input appreciated

I have built some that ran pretty well. With a 3.91 posi, low gear trans, 3500 converter, headers, intake and a 500 Holley you should be a 14-15 second car..

I had a $50 winter beater slant six back in the day and it ran 17.7 cant see why you can't get 15's with 4 Barrel, gears and header.
I seen a kid at Moparfest once with a slant six dart put out 200 rear wheel and talked with him and I think he said he had run 14.0 street tires through big single exhaust.

Box stock '68 should run mid-18's or so.

With a 390 Holley, intake, headers, good converter, and 3.91 gears you can run low 16's-high 15's.

My ex-wife and I raced a stock '76 Duster for a couple seasons at RT66. Fastest the car ever went was 19:30's and we had a ball with it. I qualified for the bracket finals and went 4 rounds, and the following year won the Drag News Race for the Ring running 19:70's.

Contrary to the popular belief, a slow car will not necessarily be consistent. My car was notorious for running dead-nuts 2 rounds, and either picking up or slowing down a couple tenths out of nowhere.

Not to concerned with how fast it is, just want to make the index. If it ran 18.5 that would be fine. The cars you guys talk about, what elevation? The track is at 3075 actual, usually 5800 plus corrected. Consistency? Driver error usually outweighs that everytime!!!

At 5000+ you may be a little slow for the 19:99 cut box stock. Changes in elevation, humidity, and wind will really hurt a little more way more than a big block. You may find that with a stock motor a set of 3.91 gears in the rear may be just perfect, and will help with the weather/elevation changes.

My 72 slant six duster ran 18.10 last September in the 1/4 bone stock. Has the 7 1/4 rear in it, crappy tires, two barrel "super six" setup, points ignition, restrictive wal mart air filter insidd the factory pie pan, and the three speed manual tranny. I could have easily got in the 17s if I would have been able to drive the car a little more, and having an automatic would have helped the ET too. I would think that a mechanical solid cam, pistons, shorty headers from clifford, and a hyper-pack intake/four barrel combo would help, but I am not sure about 14s. I raced against a guy with all that done and I was within a second of him... have time slip to prove. I guess gears would help quite a bit though...
The slant six's heads are very restrictive with not much room for improvement (one of many reasons why I went with a 340), unless you use forced injection. There are some wicked forced injection leaning towers of power out there runnin with the V8s though!!

The main crutch in racing this engine is the manifold arrangement with the exhaust manifold heat control valve. I have tried gutting them out and using block plates and a phenolic spacer on the carb, but the stock manifolds just get too hot.

The headers and aluminum intake will get you where you want to go.

That car is pretty light, should be around 2900#
so I believe you should see 17s with a header, gear
and carb

I'm a fan of the 225's. Had one in high school years ago and simply could not kill that engine despite the punishment I'd had put it through.

While browsing through I see slant six, I dont think I am interested until I notice the last post was from Bill Hartman. I KNEW there would be a interesting photo and again he did not let me down. Interesting post and another nice photo.

Thanks Frito I have to tell you, around 1977 when my dad was working at Springfield Dodge just outside of Philly PA, that dart was a one owner trade in. He paid $50 for it. Yes...$50. I drove and punished that car all through high school as well as delivered pizza's in it nightly for two years. Only adds were a scrounged up set of small bolt pattern rally wheels, air shocks, traction bars, and a thrush muffler. Ever hear a slant six with a thrush muffler? Quite the sound....kinda like a whoopee cushion. ONLY $50!

FWIW, my 63 Valiant conv. runs 17.50's with stock exhaust manifold and 2.94 gears. Mods are 2-barrel carb, 252 duration Comp cam, milled head and 2" single exhaust.

Theres a local guy here that ran a /6 years ago with his dad at the flats, it was turboed or supercharged. I went to his place to help him with RB in an A body. He said he had everything from the build and nothing to do with it anymore, he asked me if i knew anyone that would be interested in it. I will try to contact him and see if he still has all the stuff for it...They set some records with the car. He told me they took the car out, ran it and injected water in it for something and it ran strong, broke the record, went out a couple months later and the car wouldnt turn over, everything was rusted up. They ended up going back home..Phill

I have three '68 slant six Valiants, a V100, a V200 and a Signet.

The V200 (pictured) is stock except for electonic ign and a 2.25" exhaust pipe. It ran a 18.38 allowing it shift itself.



The Signet has had the heater and wipers removed, fiberglass buckets added, to lighten it up. The original untouched motor has electronic ign, Super Six BBD and a MP header with 3" exh added. It went 17.44 shifting at 4400rpm.

The V100 has yet to make a pass.

I'm building a Slant 6 with a blower. Today I dropped in a mock up engine block and trans. I'll start on making the motor mounts next week.
