528" Hemi with the new FBO control box, phased dizzy and matching coil, new wires. The motor begins to break up around 4500 rpm. Spoke with Don about it and he said it was due to interference with my old Sun tach. I disconnected the tach without any improvement.
What do you recommend for a good ignition system; Pertronix in my existing distributor, MSD Ready to Run, Fire Core??? I was thinking it would be of benefit to run a stock type of system in the event something breaks down and your in some small town, stock parts would be available.
thanks!

Before you go changing out parts try re gapping your plugs. My 540 inch hemi was doing the same thing with full MSD ignition with the plugs gapped at .040. Re gapped to .030 problem gone.

confused I use to run .090 with my old NHRA Hemi A/S car with a MSD 404 B ignition and Malllory 28880 coil, never missed a beat up to 7000 RPM when valve float would start to rear it ugly head confused shruggy OP, whay ECU part # do you have from FBO? Maybe it has a built in RPM limiter in it workCheck the total timiing at and above 4500 RPM twocents

Cab,
It is the FBO billet box with the adjustable rev control. Changing the RPM limit has no affect on how the engine runs. Had it on the dyno recently and the A/F is dialed in but it kept falling apart around 4700rpm. That is when I called Don and he blamed the condition on the tach, said he had seen it a few times in the past. Dyno shop suggested MSD Ready to Run dist and be done with it.

rotor phasing. condition of plugs and plug wires. My SWAG "sub in a non FBO box & if no luck then sub in a non FBO coil". pickup coil might be a possibility (check the reluctor gap also)

Never take for granted that new parts are correct out of the box and I know that doesn't make since. I had a FBO ignition kit done for a big block coronet I had. After a lot of trouble including a blown head gasket. I started to check the distributor phasing and it was off quite a bit. When I would put it up to were number one should be it was almost to the next plug. So I tore the new distributor apart to try to find the problem. What I found was no pin to locate the reluctor wheel and it had slid around on the distributor shaft. Once I got the head gaskets replaced and the distributor fixed I never had any other issues. Not running anyone down with this post, possibly just a over site that can happen but it made me really start to look at everything that I buy now.
I have always had very good luck with MSD ignition products. I have also heard good things about firecore products including there distributor. I have personally used his plug wires and really liked them plus he is a member here. Good luck with your car.
Matt

Give me a call. We can go over some options. I suggest first of all, a call to R/T Garage. Troy will shed a lot of light.
