I just replaced the camshaft in my 440 and was wanting to know if I still need to prime the engine oil pressure up with a drill and shaft at the oil pump to get the lifters oiled. Also at what rpm do you recomend to run it at and for how long?
Thanks for the help !
Dave

Sure wouldn't hurt anything and use a good oil with zinc and a zinc additive like GM EOS.

(1) yes (2) ~2500 rpm for 20-30 minutes & read "breakin secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com & you know about having enough ZDDP in your oil. Also it's critical for the lifter/bore clearance to be correct so that the lifter can rotate in it's bore. EDIT check by clean lifter and bore with brake clean & lube bore & lifter lightly with WD40 & lift lifter up off of each lobe with your finger & let go & lifter should fall down onto each lobe with a "thunk" & if good, lube bottom (only) of lifter(not the sides) plus lobes with the cam breakin paste.

Do you have a chevy(maybe even a GM) dealer that has a bottle of EOS

you could look for a bottle of Competition Cams break in additive--thats usually not too hard to find.

You might want to put some thought into what oil is in the crankcase. Using some easily available Chevron delo or Shell Rotella 15-40 would be a good start (FAR better than some energy conserving auto oils). Still add an additive though. Even a bottle of STP RED would work as long as your oil selection is carefully made.

Always prime if you can turning motor over by hand or with starter to oil top end as close to starting as possible. Pumps up lifters and gets oil everywhere it needs to be the moment it starts.
Chev EOS and Mopar crankcase conditioner were the same product and no longer have zinc. use Hughes high pressure additive or comp cams and a break in oil, change oil and filter after an hour or so of running and always use a zinc additve for life as new oils don't have it
2200 to 2500 for 15 to 20 minutes if you have to shut of for any reason do so and just go back to 2200 on start up till your time is done.

I keep the intake off until I've rotated it(by hand) to hit the 2 "sweet spots" where the top is being oiled then I take off the rocker shaft assy's & add some more goop to the lobes & reinstall rocker shafts/intake & button it back up. R&R ing the rocker shafts doesn't change the lash settings. A bit excessive but I'm getting that way in my old age.
