I usually let it warm up for a couple of minutes before I back out. I usually keep and eye on the temp gauge and wait for it to hit around 100 degrees before putting into reverse.
I did some searching on the internet and saw that some said that the fluid would drain out of the converter while sitting and putting the car in neutral for a few seconds would get the pump going and help out with issues like this. I just read that today so I havent had a chance to try it yet but I will give it shot this afternoon and see if that makes any difference. that is what is referred to as morning sickness, LOL, There is a fix for it but the Neutra thing works fine

As said above: Always warm the car up in Neutral to get the transmission moving. If I go straight from P to R, I have noticed the same thing the OP describes. I've always assumed its a sign that the converter isn't pumped full.

It takes more fluid to go in reverse than drive.
