I have a freshly rebuilt 727 that whines in reserve when its cold. The transmission works fine otherwise. I learned from the forum that some of the 727's do whine like this and its not a huge concern but I wanted to ask a few more questions. My 727 is bascially a stock rebuild and it has a 2400-2600 stall. I have a 2.94 gear in the car so it is geared pretty tall. When I first fire up the car cold and I go to back out of the shop I get the whine in reverse and the converter seems "looser". By looser I mean I have to give it some throttle and get the rpms up to around 2200 to get the car moving(it seems looser than my GM muscle car with a 3600 stall from the same manufacturer). Once the transmission gets up to temperature the whine goes away and then the car will move in reserve at idle with no throttle applied like it does in drive. None of these items are a problem for me I just wanted to make sure I am not ignoring something that needs to be addressed before it causes more issues. Thanks!

I usually let it warm up for a couple of minutes before I back out. I usually keep and eye on the temp gauge and wait for it to hit around 100 degrees before putting into reverse.

I did some searching on the internet and saw that some said that the fluid would drain out of the converter while sitting and putting the car in neutral for a few seconds would get the pump going and help out with issues like this. I just read that today so I havent had a chance to try it yet but I will give it shot this afternoon and see if that makes any difference.

that is what is referred to as morning sickness, LOL,

There is a fix for it but the Neutra thing works fine

Good deal! I was hoping it would not be any big deal I just hated to ignore it and potentially cause more problems. Thanks for the replies!

As said above: Always warm the car up in Neutral to get the transmission moving. If I go straight from P to R, I have noticed the same thing the OP describes. I've always assumed its a sign that the converter isn't pumped full.

Sonnax sells a kit to fix this problem along with a bunch of others that were chronic with the 727/904 trannys. Tim

It takes more fluid to go in reverse than drive.

One of my Chryslers when you first start it for the day always took a couple seconds to go into reverse and it whined too. Shifting into neutral for a few seconds and then reverse made it work normal. My truck with high stall converter does the same thing and again I usually shift it into neutral first and then reverse.
