trying to come up with an idea to keep it close to the stock location. I was thinking of a strap running across the two mounting holes and then a vertical plate to mount the coil to. Anyone done anything like this?

I'm going to on my upcoming 451 to keep the coil vertical, propably mod the OE coil bracket/turn it 1/4 turn then work around that. Have SB brackets on hand. here's a BTT for ya.

MSD makes a stock looking coil epoxy filled that will mount like the original.

edit: read your post wrong, I thought you were wanting it stock looking.

I mounted mine with the factory six pack coil mount

With a big block you could mount it to the pass fender and keep it cool away from engine heat. I would not try to make it look stock.

I mount all my coils on the passenger fender away from the motor.

The OP never said anything about making it LOOK stock, just that he wanted to MOUNT IT CLOSE TO THE STOCK LOCATION.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

The vertical plate seems to be the best and easiest solution to mount it in that area...Find a happy medium between too thin and too thick for the plate...Weld some nuts on the backside to make it an easy process for coil removal...From the pic you might be able to add an attaching foot to the valley pan rail bolt that would help keep any vibration/resonance to a minimum...

Wouldn't mounting a coil of that style, on the engine like that, kill it with heat?

Coil mounting orientation is important on oil-filled coils. The coils the OP mentions are all solid insulated and can be mounted in any orientation.

About the coil location at the back of the engine: Millions of coils have been mounted at that same location and problems with heat were few. My Suburban had the solid coil mounted in a similar place and the hood would get so hot after a long drive that you couldn't put your hand on it. I had no coil problems, and that coil location was used on every chevy truck V-type engine from 1989 to 1999.

Carry an extra coil with you. I speak from experience. whistling

3 years of limited driving and my FireCore coil was toast. Plug wires are still great after 10 years though.(I was probably one of their first plug wire customers.)

I had a local boat shop fabricate one for me. Fits great, clears everything, just need to get it powdercoated.

about $75. Way more than anyone should pay for a coil mount, but it tucks it in real close to the intake

Mine is mounted on the inner passenger side fender wall to keep away from heat. Though I trust Firecore products, I still bought an extra one that rides shotgun in the trunk because an electrical item is just that, Electrical and unpredictable no matter who makes it.
So far, so good with many street miles.
