Not sure if you have these over there, but I used a pair of springs off a 80s-90s K car derivative. Mine specifically were off a Shadow or Daytona.

There used to be a guy who posted them in the for sale section here on Moparts.

Good luck!

Check with Glasstek. I don't know about A body, but I got my E body lightweight springs from them when I bought my hood.

Subject: MOPAR A-body low tension hood springs (Martin)

Hi, Martin. Thanks for your inquiry. I still have MOPAR A-body low tension hood springs for use with bolt-on fiberglass hoods available and ready to ship. These springs work with your existing stock hood hinges and will replace your stock hood springs. The total price to get one pair of low tension hood springs to your door within the USA, including shipping, would be $50.00. I accept PayPal or US Postal money order for payment.

If you'd like to pay me via PayPal, please send the payment to me at logan_dg@yahoo.com (please note that there is an underscore "_" character between "logan" and "dg" in the e-mail address).

You can also pay via US Postal money order (please use only US Postal money orders for payment, as other non-Postal money orders must be cleared through the bank before springs are shipped, which delays the process) by sending the payment to me at the following address:

Dennis Logan
2506 Indale Rd
Glen Allen, VA 23060-4406

Once payment is received, the springs are typically shipped the next day. Once shipped, I provide a follow-up E-mail letting you know that the springs have been shipped.

Thanks for your inquiry and let me know how you'd like to proceed.

--Dennis

this is the guy that sells them on moparts. his email is happee_feelings@yahoo.com

FWIW, when I needed some for my '68 Barracuda I went to the local U-Pull with a stock spring, a dial caliper and a small assortment of demolition tools. Those springs were all over the place and I ended up taking home three pairs of different rate. I even saw a ford truck with springs that looked exactly like my original. I even pried one off to compare unloaded dimensions and it looked the same. The FWD cars had them but those were very light and had a ton of preload. Keep an eye on them when you pry them off 'cause they might fly some distance. runaway
I started out with my 'medium' springs and it was perfect. I can open my glass hood half way and it stays there.

This is encouraging...but k-cars were turned to cubes long ago for most of us.

Can anyone vouch for other, slightly more recent models that use a light weight circular/watch-type spring like the ones that a-bodies run? I heard that first gen Grand Cherokees we’re suitable donors...

Thanks for any suggestions!

if K-car type springs can't be found, would it be possible to convert to a small hood gas shock setup ? just a thought.

Buddy of mine used window winder springs out of a Ford pickup on his Valiant. I think he got them from Rock Auto.

You responded to a 3+ year old thread. The yard I used is now a sleazy industrial auction site.
I believe the springs I used came off either a Dakota, Durango or Jeep of some sort.

Didn't I read about someone using springs from Home Depot, Lowes, or some other builders supply? work

When I changed my pin-on hood to bolt on I started out looking for lighter springs, but later went with a quick release pin through a hole drilled in the hinge.

Ace Hardware garage door springs...they work great, just don’t use heat to bend the ends. They also have different tension in lbs, and they are the pull kind of spring.

I used a set off an 83 Mirada on a 70 Duster with a glass hood and they work perfect! I believe the Daytona/Laser springs are the same.
The bends and diameter were the same as an A-body hood spring, but the WIDTH is narrower which makes for less tension.

Got a part #, dimensions, or pic?

I pulled the stock springs off the hinges when I installed the AAR hood and I'm tired of using a wood stick to hold it open.
