Somewhere on here in the past, someone posted how they inserted a metal rod down in the oil galley passage on the back of the block that intersects the driver's side(?) lifter galley passage. This is the same galley passage some people either plug off entirely, or put a plug w/ a small hole in.

The rod was described as having been turned down enough to allow for oil to get around it, but still large enough to act as a restrictor for the lifter galley passage. By doing this, the poster was able to get the idle oil pressure back up to something more "normal", which IIRC they said had dropped dramatically as the result of using roller lifters having cut-away bands in the bodies.

Instead of bushing the lifter bores, is this a reasonable "cheap fix" to use if the style of the roller lifter body may expose too much of the lifter galley and, as a result, drop the oil pressure? I know the IMM lifters I own, and similar COMP lifters, have been used successfully in unbushed blocks (440Jim, Brian at IMM), but once in a while there have been posts by people (such as the one I'm referring to) who have used the COMP cut-away lifter and did experience oil pressure loss. Thanks - Brad

FWIW, this is a pic of the IMM lifters, although mine have the offset intake seat.

I did a fancy screw in plug once with an o-ring seal and a bleed hole but it was a bunch of work. These days I just ream the gallery to the right size and press a plug in there with a 0.062 hole. That hole size is big enough to provide lots of lube for the lifters but it does act as a restriction if a lifter fails. It will also keep the oil pressure high with cold oil but the oil pressure bleeds down fairly quickly with hot oil.

No way I owuld put a straight rod big enough inside the oil galley to restrict the oil pressure with either a straight body or a set of roller lifters like yours with the cutaway body, they both would rub on the rod runaway work shruggy I have used several small welsh plugs in the left side oil galley, driver side, oil galley to stop oil going down that side up Two .040 holes drilled in the middle before installing them would allow some oil down that galley work

That's not what I'm asking about. The channel in the back of the block that feeds the oil pressure sending unit also happens to intersect the lifter galley (or is it gallery?). The guy I remember put a thin metal rod down THAT channel, not one all the way through the lifter galley (or is it gallery?). Big difference! grin

The drilled plug idea works, too. I think the person who did the rod trick wasn't sure what diameter to make it, so he could remove it w/ a magnet if necessary to change its diameter.

The simple way to restrict oil on a Big Block on the drivers side oil Gallery is with a 19/32 plug pressed in with a .050 hole in the center. If you need to remove it a long sheet metal screw and washers is all that is required.

Oil feeds from the right gallery up to the left side oil pressure tap at the back of the block. The right side oil pressure tap intersects the left side pressure tap to feed the left gallery. With rollers you can completely block the left gallery by inserting a plug down below the X intersection of the two pressure feed taps. The right gallery itself can not be restricted in any way as it feeds the crank and cam.

My lifters have EDM oiling to the bearings, so I want to make sure there is still sufficient oil getting to the lifter bores for that.

The issue should not be with the cut away lifter body but with the material around the roller. You need a roller lifter with the wheel shrouded (like Crane 66550's) so the passage doesn't get exposed.

If the shroud on both the front and back of your lifter is the same then that is likely the issue. The shrouding is usually longer on the back side so the galley doesn't get exposed.

The lifters in your photo don't have enough of a shroud and will expose the galley on a .600 lift cam (had the same issue).

Not according to Brian at IMM (those are his lifters shown) and 440Jim (who ran the comparable COMP 892 version).

I haven't seen any solid lifter bodies that shroud the wheel any more than these, either. Any pics you can provide of ones that do would be of interest. Thanks - Brad

Well my Crane 66550's definitely shroud the wheels more but unfortunately they're buttoned up in the motor so I can't take a photo. It doesn't look loike those lifters of yours could be shrouded any more so my guess is the wheel is smaller on the Cranes to allow more shrouding.

If you're so inclined, read through this thread which I started due to my dilemma a few years back. It may shed some light on your issues as there was a lot of good input. In the end I bought the Crane 66550's from member "Competition Wedge". Great price at the time!!

Brad, I think it was me you are referring to. I responded to a post by Rebel a while back and posted what I did, with pics. Worked great for me and, I also did the same mod to a buddy's engine also worked well. I can remove the modification in about 5 minutes if needed...

i've done that trick Brad is talking about, i found a drill bit that was close & used the shank part only. it definately helped bump the idle oil pressure up when hot. Because it wasn't a press fit, it bleed thru a bit & you could see oil oozing out of the lifter bores on the blanked bank, not as much as the mains side but enough to notice. i use the same lifters in an Indy block & those bores are dry & the lifter gets lots of lube as the oil floods down from the head.
