Ok, here is the strangest question I have had to ask ...

A few days ago I went to fire up my '70 Super Bee as I do try to do every week while it's sitting in the garage. I notice it seems to be struggling a bit to maintain idle so get out and smell gas right away.

I look under the car and sure enough there's a steady flow of gas streaming down from the right front corner of the engine area. I didn't stop to look any closer at it and just shut it all down. Getting my light on it now, I could see it there was gas around the pump itself, the vapor separator unit (it's a 440 car) and the in-line fuel filter (which I have in between the metal line coming from the tank and the fuel pump itself.

So, I figured I'd best wait 'til my buddy came over the next day and get a better look at where it's actually leaking while under the car while he cranks the engine over. Well, here's the weird part .. so the next day I'm all set to see where the leak is... he cranks it over.. no leak. Engine starts up with no problem, runs as strong as ever. I try that 3 or 4 times. Nothing leaking. Took the car out for about 30 minutes of driving, stopping every couple of minutes to check. Still no leak!

Can a fuel system possibly leak one day and not the next ?? This is one of the strangest things I've seen. Any ideas? I plan to just replace all the lines and filter just to be safe. Not sure if I should replace the fuel pump too (can those leak fuel externally? not sure how fuel is routed through them inside).

Thanks a lot!

I has a similar problem recently, it was a split fuel hose.

one time it happened to me like that. I replaced all the neoprene lines & that took care of it.

check for sure on the pump itself

they will leak gas into the oil pan and wipe the bearings

there is a weep hole on it and gas will come from there if the diefram goes bad( smallblocks for sure)

I have had 2 dump gas in the oil over the yrs so smell the oil and see if it smell like it has gas

and yes the rubber goes bad and will leak, some times a turn on the clamp tightens it back up,but the best thing would be to replace them

Ok, thanks a lot guys for the help on this! I'll just go ahead and replace all the rubber hoses to be safe.

Regarding the fuel pump itself, I didn't know there was a weep hole on these. I've got a stock big block pump, but I'll have to check out where that hole is. Does anyone know if the leak from that weep hole would be just a dribble or a constant stream of fuel? When I did see the fuel leaking down that one day it was a steady constant stream running down.

Thanks again!
