Getting ready to put my 440 together and wondering about cam selection. Here is what I have, 9.2 compression,346 open chamber heads, Hooker Comp headers, Eddy RPM intake, electronic ignition, stock stall replacement convertor. This is going in a 66 Satellite, 3:23 gears. It's going to be a cruiser, that will see the track a couple of times a year, but will mostly see duty on the street and I occasionally want to spank a chevy or a furd just for fun. I don't really want a lumpy cam. Been looking at some of Hughes grinds and leaning towards something 220-230 duration @ .050 and .495-.515 lift. They have a few grinds similar to this claiming lot's of torque and smooth idle. Would like your opinions. Thanks.

Ask all you want bro, that is the whole purpose of moparts (ex for the shout box...) easy/cheap choice would be the summitt 6401. one time I had Dave Hughes pick me a circle track cam & it was somewhat too much as it did not come on till the end of the straights but when it did, in an instant the eng seemed supercharged! Maybe I did not give him all of the parameters at the time but he did say that the one he was picking was a bit tamer than the one he originally had in mind. it mighta needed advancing

I'm running a Crane 0.484 lift/226 duration cam with Rhoads lifters in my 69 GTX that has A/C and power brakes, 9.7:1, runs great, a nice combo. On the 63 Dodge with manual steering and brakes, Eddy heads and 850 carb, 10.25:1, using the old school MP .509 cam 4120237, runs a little rough but just sounds great, and lots of power, no problems on the street with it.

I have the 6401 in the 440 that's in my pickup. It turns on fine, but I would like something with a smoother idle. I've had people tell me the idle is barely noticeable, but it's pretty noticeable in this engine. So you're saying the 6401 idles too rough for you? That cam is only 224/234 @050 and on a wide 114 LSA. If you want something smoother you're going to have to step down below 220 @ 050 on the intake side to something like a stock replacement 440 HP cam.
